Carlson better not stink.
I am not sure what you hope to see from a guy who will hit .200 vs RHP, which is most of them. IMO, we will see from Carlson exactly what we have seen the last two years. Probably even less since the performance trajectory has been downward. His limited usefulness will have him glued to the bench like he mostly has been.
I was just wondering about that Pads. How do you see the bullpen? My quick take is:
Left: Romero, Liberatore, King
Right: Helsley, Kittridge, Gallegos, Pallante, and Fernandez, with Robertson or a surprise from a AAA pitcher as alternatives to Fernandez.I’m thinking they send Thompson to AAA to be stretched out when they need him to move into the rotation.
If there was ever a guy with motivation to have a banner season its Kittredge. He’s only going to have a brief window to cash in and its after this season.
Another bullpen possibility.

That is a misleading post by Heyman. Brasier posted a 7.20 ERA over 20 games with Boston. He was released in late May and then signed with the Dodgers and went 0.70 ERA over 39 games. So I would want to know the rest of the story.
Yeah a pretty dramtic split. A 7.29 ERA in 21 innings with the Red Sox then a 0.70 ERA in 38.2 innings with the Dodgers.
From what I have read he added a cutter with the Dodgers that he wasn’t using with the Sox. Releivers are volatile.
If the Cards go with 13 pitchers, and the expected starting 5 stays healthy and effective, there appears to be 6 relievers as likely to make the team, Helsley, Gallegos, Fernandez, Romero, King, and Kittridge. That would leave 2 spots up for grabs.
I know that injuries will change these projections, but I like our depth. I am also assuming Thompson and Liberatore start at Memphis, but they could be in the big league pen. Pallante’s role seems uncertain as well

This does not seem possible. Maybe one of them early until others, Roby, Hansen, come up from below.
McGreevy, Graceffo, Robberse, Kloffenstein are locks.
The ML acquisitions say what needs to be said about Liby and Thompson. And McGreevy and Graceffo can’t hold their spots forever. They will need to show they are ML ready by the time the decision to pick up option years on Lynn and Gibson rolls around. Or by the end of this year at least.
This pen today, is worse than last seasons, by a lot.
They are 25mil under the first tax threshold and are done spending. There is no 8 to 10mil aav reliever coming.
This pen today, is failure waiting to happen. I guess the pen didn’t embarrass the FO as badly as the rotation did in 23′.
False hope is alive and well again this season.
I disagree about the state of the bullpen. Bringing in fresh, live arms Robertson and Fernandez are good moves. Kittredge is good also. A full season of King and Romero helps. And subtractingVerhagen was positive. Perhaps Liberatore, who put up good numbers in relief might help. Having more depth helps with Granillo, O’Brien, and Rodriguez. But one of my favorite additions last year, Svanson, I think will be a solid, maybe late inning help by mid 2024.
Of note, all of the pitchers with negative fWAR last season are gone with the exception of Pallante and Rom (both -0.1). So there may be some addition by subtraction, depending on who replaces them.

We are unprepared to hold leads, and save them, if that matters to you. I really don’t care who throws the when behind innings. Pick any unproven. Hope is not a strategy to succeed with leads.
JJ, those figures show that the Cardinals were about league average in holds and saves in relation to save opportunities.
I factored in Helsleys 2023, and everyone on the current roster. Any hope for increased production, I leave to others.
