The Middleton deal having been reported Thursday night, it seems like the physical would have happened Friday, yet we heard nothing. Perhaps some foot dragging while a 40 man move is finalized.

Yep, could be. Maybe they are trying to finalize an impact trade with the 40th man😀

Or Mo is trying to figure out how to not have a cast off show up in a WS box score.

Ah yes, the James Naile exit strategy. If you get shipped out on a schooner to Asia, you’ve been Nailed!

Mo nightmare: ” and Kennedy with a slick pivot to turn two, and that’s a WS winner!”.

After hearing all the rumors about the Cards picking up just about every free agent reliever, we windup with a guy that, to my knowledge, was not mentioned at all. Kind of makes you wonder if that is the reason Mozeliak selected him to sign on. Mo loves surprises. As far as thee 40-man goes…. a P added and a P dropped has been a trend but I don’t know if Middleton is even a better choice than Zuniga. GZ may have a higher ceiling. I said “may”.

Middleton will have all the competition he can handle from our in-house rotaion prospects moving to the BP.

Responding to Brian’s poll, I’ll put my money on Young. I agree with jnevel re Zuniga and potential upside. At the least, they can see how he looks in spring. Fermin and Siani seem to me possible 26th players on the MLB roster, late defensive sub if they pinch hit for Winn (with Fermin taking SS or Siani taking CF and Edman moving to SS). Kennedy is only 25 to Young’s 28 and that has me giving Kennedy the slight edge for being retained.

Bullpens are kind of a crapshoot after the closer. So having lots of depth to see which ones float to the top is typically a good strategy.

True. But you have to use the floaters in tight games, and the s(t)inkers in mop up roles until the subsequent roster shuffle. Could you please explain that to Marmol?

Or maybe, he just wasn’t able to get to St. Louis Friday. I highly doubt the 40-man move requires extensive deliberation that hadn’t happened already…

If somebody offered to pay you $1 million next year if you could be in STL by tomorrow, what are the chances you would be in STL tomorrow?

Oh, of course, the offer had a 24-hour expiration, not just to accept, but to complete the physical, too! You have to work really hard sometimes to try to create controversy when there likely isn’t any, but this is even a stretch for you…

Unless a trade is made my guess is that Fermin would be DFA’d. He did not impress late last year, and we have many 2b/3b types of infielders.

    Call off the controversy!!!!!

4:04 p.m. The Cardinals have confirmed the Middleton contract via press release. It includes a team option for 2025. No mention of associated roster move.

C27, the only leg up Fermin has on the others is he can play shortstop. That may be enough to save his bacon for a while.

Sounds like $6M guaranteed and $11M total if the Cardinals exercise the option for year 2.

My vote would be for Alfonso Rivas to go through waivers once again.

November 2, 2023: Selected off waivers by the Cleveland Guardians from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
December 22, 2023: Selected off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels from the Cleveland Guardians.
January 29, 2024: Selected off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Los Angeles Angels.

    Hmmmm, So likely 1/5mil, w/a 1mil buyout, or 5 & 6mil for both seasons.

Not a bad payday for a one-hit wonder.

If it’s $5 million that might be a bit of an overpay, but it sounds like the Yankee’s wanted him back from the few things I read but the Cardinals may have came up with the better offer.

Bullpen must feature varying looks and repertoire. Middleton looks to be unique (other than Helsley) in relying on a style of pitching backwards.
I suspect they have been holding back Zuniga because right now (after his winter performance), he looks neither healthy nor good.

Yankees used him when behind, low lev, 10 of 12 appearances. It’s the best part of his season.

I feel pretty sure Mo doesn’t want Zuniga back in Memphis sucking up innings between IL stints. There is a glut of guys needing those innings.

OK, let’s have a new survey on what happens to Zuniga:

    Clears waivers
    Claimed off waivers
    Released
    Traded

    Released.
