where our division is headed, it’s going to remain very competitive

The division is a competition in futility.

The organization’s goal seems to be to suck less than the rest of the division.

It’s a shame it’s not closer to the end of July and I don’t know if anyone would be interested at the moment, but now would be a good time to place Paul DeJong in a window display and hope he attracts a browser. I think Bikemike summed it up in the context that he’s been around for 7 seasons. Dogs bark, water’s wet and DeJong is who he is. And I can’t base this on anything tangible, but even though he’s generated some recent offensive production, for some reason I feel like playing him every day has hurt the team. I’d like to see a stable middle IF with Eddie and Donnie at SS and 2B respectively.

Yeah, the “competitive” term is one they like to toss around any time they don’t dare mention a term synonymous with “win.” If they’re determined to be competitve, they can start by salvaging a split vs. a team that’s 21 games under .500 and blanked them on 2 hits in front of a home crowd of 45,000 yesterday.

Competitive? The hottest competition seems to be for the cellar of the Central. For the moment, the Birds are edging out the Cubs, but still can widen the gap with a few more two-hit games.

The Marlins are 2 games over .500 and 4 back of the Braves in 2nd place over in the NLE with a better W/L record than both the Mets and Phillies. Skippy has his team playing pretty well during their first 55 games. I’d have to guess that when he was a Cardinal he paid close attention to the regimen and protocol put forth by guys like TLR, Duncan, and Oquendo. I wonder who the current Cardinal manager’s mentors were?

I felt Skip had a good chance to be a successful manager. But I thought taking the Miami job would kill his opportunity for advancement before he even got a shot. It’s early for him, but so far it is actually getting him noticed.

I don’t know who Marmol’s mentors were but I believe he was a Cardinals minor leaguer before becoming manager at Johnson City, State College, and Palm Beach before the joining the big league staff in 2017.

Actually one of LaRussa’s biggest protege’s was Mike Shildt. They were very close. His firing is still mysterious.

WTF are DeJong and Yepez doing in there?????

What’s the over/under on DeJong and Yepez going 1-8 tonight?

Rats – there’s nothing wrong with Yepez at DH. Besides, with Nootbaar hurt, who else would we play today? The bench is left with Knizner, Barrera, and Mercado. Those are our 3 worst hitters. Yepez absolutely should DH today over Mercado.

    And that sums that up.

I feel bad for Edman playing all over the place. But he is very good wherever you put him. I bet he could be a better defensive catcher than Contreras.

Are Carlson and O’Neill still on the IL?

Yes, Carlson is getting close to going on a rehab assignment. O’Neill doesn’t seem to be making any progress at all with his ailment.

We should see Carlson and Woodford back soon with hopefully Packy back not too far behind them. Carlson will replace Barrera – at least I’m nearly certain. The other 2 are more questionable as to who they would replace. I’m typically in favor of depth as I argued strenuously in the offseason to keep DeJong and Knizner. But in this case, I would be ok with a DFA of VerHagan. Barring injuries though, one of Woodford or Libby would have to return to Memphis when Packy returns. I’d vote Woodford.

Thanks, gscottar. O’Neill’s sure provided confirmation that the aribiter’s decision last spring was the correct one. He just can’t show up for work.

He is 1TD. But he should be coming off sometime in June. Hopefully anyway

Oh okay, Jnevel. Yeah, I guess it’s been a while since he’s been gone. At any rate, the one area that’s gone well this season has been lack of injuries. They can’t use that as an alibi.

Yeah, aside from 2 of our main OF’s going down at the same time recently, there really hasn’t been much negative impact from injuries. And the way O’Neill was playing, that injury really hasn’t hurt at all (aside from Ollie choosing to play Yepez in left on occasion).

Carlson’s OPS+ is 72 and O’Neill’s is 70 so no big loss to the lineup in either case. They both have defensive utility though. Burleson’s OPS+ is 85 and Yepez’s is 99, so neither of them is hitting enough to justify the hit on defense. A lot of names that doesn’t add up to anything. I wish Mo could trade all four for one who could both hit and field decently.

I agree with you bling, but if forced to choose, I would pick defense.

Yeah, I agree. But I am OK with Burly out there over Mercado. That guy rubs me the wrong way.
