Helsley is Jekyll and Hyde, as he comes back to get the 2nd out after 2 walks, but then gives up a game losing double.
Walks kill.
Helsley’s last pitch couldn’t have been any more center-center. He had no idea where his pitches were landing today.
Cards can’t hit and they can’t pitch. Walks. They just kill you.
Oh well, they will still only be five games out.
And the guy passed the leader on the last lap of the Indianapolis 500 and won. Josef Newgarden was his name, or something like that. Imagine how that guy feels that got passed on the last lap. He feels about like Helsley feels about now.

ED that last sentence is like a center-center comment. I could take that thing yard. These guys are what they are, and that’s not very good.
Yep TexasCard and Wooster, walks will bleed you to death, but wild in the zone can lead to a nuclear blast. Cards are feeling the fallout now.
Yep, Indy 500 was much more exciting. Red flag until last two laps. Need to regroup for KC and take 2 of 2 starting tomorrow.
First the facts, then the analysis.
Facts: It is known that when Helsley pitches more than an inning, or when he pitches on consecutive days, the result is poorer than when those factors are not it play.
Fact: Boy genius (not to be confused with the alternative rock band) put into to play both facts on consecutive days.Analysis: Boy genius is trying to get into a mental hospital, but they ruled him sane. To prove them wrong, he is going to any lengths to show the world he is nuttier than a fruit cake.
On other hand, maybe I’m over analyzing Helsley, and he just an average relief pitcher, and his average 3.52 ERA is indicative of his abilities and not to be blamed on Boy genius.
But if that is the case, why is he our closer?In 55 games played the Cardinals have 12 quality starts, which is 22% of the time. Not good. That leads to a worn out bullpen, which hinders the options for Boy Genius. The Head Genius upstairs has given Boy Genius a crap sandwich of a starting rotation.
It seems Hicks and Helsley are trending in opposite directions. Hicks could very well be the closer by the end of June, or possibly Gallegos will ascend to primary 9th inning guy.
I still think the Cardinals screwed up with Hicks. Had they kept him in the minors as a starter and groomed him correctly, there is a good chance he would be a top tier starter right now. Just what they need. But management rarely thinks too far ahead and they had him throw his arm out. He is healthy again and been a 1-2 inning pitcher for awhile that he seems to finally be growing into the role.
Won’t be surprised to see him close before long, and I won’t be surprised if he excels in the role this time.
PS – My television, and pocket book are glad I was riding the bike during that ninth inning melt down. 🤬
If it were warranted I’d certainly offer it up, but I can’t and won’t offer up a crumb of criticism of the Redbird field manager in today’s lousy loss. He not only made all the right decisions at precisely the right time, but also displayed an incredible ability to avoid a panic move. The simple fact is that his closer took to the mound in the 9th and offered up 8 consecutive pitches that were nowhere near the strike zone before he got beat with a terrible pitch with the tying and winning runs aboard as a result of the 2 BB’s. Helsley alone blew the game to smithereens.
Cardinals are now 5-11 in 1 run games. At one point they were 1-7 and I strongly suspected where the origin of the problem came from, but now it’s difficult to pin it down.
Outscoring the the opponents but having a sub-.500 record generally means you are losing a lot of close ones. In turn that suggests you are not getting timely hitting, your late inning pitching is weak, and your management team is miscalculating. Some combo those.
Sometimes it happens. I expect we will progress more towards our pythag percentage, but there are examples of teams that missed the mark by quite a lot. An over-performer are the 1984 Mets, and an under-performer are the 1966 Yankees. Look ‘em up – kind of mind boggling.
