Din din today will be a couple of hamburgers on the grill, some Bush’s baked beans, a glass of water, and a few chips. And on this fine day, some homemade ice cream! Got a new recipe so hopefully it turns out okay.
Being from Indiana I’ll be watching the start and first few laps of the Indianapolis 500 before I tune in to BSMW to watch the Redbirds. Hopefully somebody will be able to hit the ball today. Those off days sure seemed to help Goldschmidt and Arenado.

Don’t know why we’ve all been whining about poor batsmanship. Apparently you only need two hits to mark a W.
Thunderstorms making all go crack and boom around here as we sit down to dinner. Hope it doesn’t knock the electricity out and ruin Sunday baseball.
I notice that we are a half game out of second place in the Division, and at the same time we are a half game out of last place in the Division. So we could be in second or last by tomorrow morning. It seems like that should warrant extra intensity.
Like Rats, I’ll watch them wave the green flag to start what was once one of my favorite sporting events and was genuinely the, “Greatest spectacle in racing.” That racing event really used to be something else with all of the not only great, but also diverse and entertaining personalities who occupied the cockpits of their machines. Names like Unser, Foyt, Mears, Andretti, Johncock, Sullivan, Rutherford, Fittipaldi…And the machines were just as diverse and interesting as the men who harnessed and controlled all that HP for 500 miles…Coyotes, Eagles, March/Cosworth, Wildcats, Lotus/Ford, McClarens, Penskes, and who can forget the great Offenhausers? I attended the ’82 Indy in which Gordon Johncock piloting his STP sponsored Wildcat Mk. 8/Cosworth outgunned and outlasted Rick Mears and his Penske/Ford in what, at the time, was the closest finish ever at Indy. I can still hear the roar of the powerplants wrapped up tight at wide open full thottle on the last 4 laps as the estimated crowd of over 300,000 almost drowned out the noise of those screaming machines as they rocketed out of the final turn and down the stretch to the checkered. Nothing else at all like it.
I’ll be outside getting all set up for the mother of all BBQs, and likely will be only catching bits and pieces of the game. This year, besides the jumbo Ballpark dogs and burgers, we are also having brats and a couple other types of sausages. That’s not the only break with longstanding holiday protocol. My boys have the giant cooler of beer and soda pop iced up out there already. A big change there is its Yuengling beer which I have never tried. I’ll offer a review later on.
I won’t fire it up until sometime after the game, but we’re going with the traditional StL. style pork steaks, baked beans, cole slaw and heated on the grill garlic and butter french bread. However, I have a half a dozen salsiccias and a package of really bad for you jumbo hot dogs I’ll throw on there to have as leftovers for a quick snack later on this week. I’ve found that hot dogs made from the worst ingredients imaginable always taste the best…Haha!
I don’t know about anyone else, but that SB by Donovan caught me as off guard as it did Cleveland and their pitcher, Sandlin. At the start of the 10th I was thinking to myself, “I hope they sac-bunt,” and then he took off! I asked this on another thread, but how’d you like to be Sandlin and be tagged with the loss and all you did was retire the side and be victimized by a SB and PB? Oh well, I guess someone has to suffer…Haha!
I glanced at an article this morning that reported on a Cardinal minor leaguer hitting a HR while breaking his bat. The article’s headline reminded me that I once saw Kevin McReynolds do the same thing at Busch Memorial when he was with the Mets. Sawed the bat right in half and the baseball still had plenty of distance to clear the LF wall. I couldn’t believe it at the time.
That Cardinal minor leaguer is Luken Baker and there is video of it out there.
On another note, if Montgomery doesn’t pitch better soon, I am in favor of sending him back to the Yankees (not likely to happen but I can dream).
I’d send Matz to the nether regions but we’re stuck with him.
Yeah, someone mentioned Matz to the BP, Marilyn, but I’m not comfortable giving the baseball to him at any time in a game. Guess we’re stuck with him for a while.
Cardinals sure have been doing a lousy job pushing that runner across from 3B with less than 2 outs as of late. I don’t think I’m all alone in saying that bothers me. A lot…

Cardinals giving away that Pujols jersey for a promotion. I thought eveyone had one of those. I have an old faded and threadbare T-Shirt style Molina jersey that I still sometimes wear when I’m cutting the grass or doing odd jobs around the house. I lifted it up off of the discount rack in about ’05 when no one wanted one…It’s old and ratty looking, but it has character…

I think we are further away from second place than that at the current moment.
The Guardians pitching has been good all weekend. Their offense may stink but if there is one thing they can do it is develop quality pitching.
Yeah, I think so too, gscottar. The way this season’s unfolded you almost have to grasp at the positive nature of being at 4 back in the NLC, but the reality is that the focus should still be placed on the fact that we’re still 6 games under .500 and nothing good will happen until the Redbirds establish themselves as at least a .500 ballclub. To me, that’s the first and most significant hurdle to clear for success.
A super rare off day for Contreras. Good. He and Goldy both look like they could use a couple. The good news is we have 2 in a row coming up . . .
