Don’t cry gscott, there’s no crying in baseball. If you look close enough you’ll see the humorous quality of it and laugh. Every now and then just punch that pillow for therapy’s sake.
And another explosion just happened again. Redbird version this time.
May 18, 2023 at 9:45 pm #221088Wow, some game. Contreras really brings the passion. He and Noot are great rah-rah guys.
May 18, 2023 at 9:47 pm #221089I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a bad feeling about this one after the Freeman GS.
May 18, 2023 at 9:48 pm #221090
jj-cf-stlParticipantLol, Gorman again
Just play himMay 18, 2023 at 9:48 pm #221091I keep saying it, Nolan Gorman is your second baseman.
May 18, 2023 at 9:49 pm #221092I’ve said this before…Gorman may hit close to 40 one day.
May 18, 2023 at 9:50 pm #2210931td, why do they keep pitching super balls to Gorman?
May 18, 2023 at 9:50 pm #221094Almonte reminds me of Alex Reyes. Wild pitch, walk, and HR. Now he just needs an IL stint.
May 18, 2023 at 9:52 pm #221095Stratton has earned the “blow out closer” role. 😀
May 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #221096Euro, at some point this organization needs to get back to valuing defense. To be candid guys like Yepez and Burleson should never step foot on a big league field defensively. It should be DH or bust for them and a couple of others. If we don’t have room at DH then they need to be traded.
May 18, 2023 at 9:54 pm #221097Contreras is really beginning to put together a solid season at the plate now with 5 HR’s, 24 RBI’s and 12 doubles. You can’t ever replace Yadier Molina, but Willson’s bat should provide some genuine consolation before season’s end.
May 18, 2023 at 9:55 pm #221098Yeah Euro, those things go “WHAM-O!”
May 18, 2023 at 9:59 pm #221099Euro, at some point this organization needs to get back to valuing defense.
You are on point and I couldn’t agree more — have said so several times myself. If they aren’t going to upgrade the pitching, they MUST put a premium on D. It’s not an option for a “pitch to contact” staff. Mo completely blew that one with his “slug matters” decree. Slug does matter, but you can’t be a nim nut about it.
But still, just laugh and punch the pillow as necessary!
May 18, 2023 at 9:59 pm #221100GScottar – I mostly agree. But I do think that Burleson is at least semi tolerable on occasion in LF. But Yepez is awful. Like just about worst I’ve ever seen in the outfield. He should only be considered for 1B/3B or DH.
Great night for our HR’s. The Dodgers nearly hit 3-5 more of them and we had several just barely get over the wall. A game of inches. But we’re due some luck.

jj-cf-stlParticipantCF: it doesn’t help that Carlson and O’Neill are both IL. Now Edman is dinged up and I like him in CF. So it’s Noot for now.
Long term, we don’t have a solution, other than an underachieving Carlson.May 18, 2023 at 10:01 pm #221102Burly has actually made some nice plays in left, but is no gazelle. Yepez looks lost a lot of the time. He may be worse than Ozuna.
Having O’Neill struggle has really hurt the outfield defense. We might seriously consider Donovan in left, with Gorman at second, Carlson and Noot in center and right. Have Burly and Yepez DH.
May 18, 2023 at 10:01 pm #221103…or heck, maybe Mercado will put his name in the mix. Nice debut for the kid.
May 18, 2023 at 10:02 pm #221104
jj-cf-stlParticipantYepez looks blindfolded
May 18, 2023 at 10:05 pm #221106I agree Mike. I would go with Donovan in LF, Carlson/Mercado in CF, and Noot in RF.
As for Gorman I am so glad we didn’t trade him for Juan Soto last year. That would have been a big mistake. In our preseason prediction thread I think I predicted that Gorman would have a big year.
May 18, 2023 at 10:06 pm #221107As far as I am concerned, Carlson and Nootbaar in CF are interchangeable. Nootbaar hasn’t played CF as much but he is speedier than Carlson. Nootbaar just needs more time there.
Nevertheless, Nootbaar is fine in RF. Carlson is injury prone almost as much as O’Neill, so getting Nootbaar more reps in CF is a good thing.
Yepez is a disaster in the outfield. I have seen him butcher the OF too much in the minor leagues. He should never play there. Burleson isn’t great either but he is better than Yepez.
May 18, 2023 at 10:12 pm #221108
jj-cf-stlParticipantWith Donovan in left, Noot in RF, Gorman at 2B and PDJ at SS; Edman would bench Carlson in CF.
May 18, 2023 at 10:13 pm #221109
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf given the opportunity
May 18, 2023 at 10:19 pm #221110
jj-cf-stlParticipantIt’s great we scored 16 runs, but the problem is still there, 8 runs allowed.
May 18, 2023 at 10:20 pm #221111I personally don’t care for Edman in the OF. He certainly is better than Yepez or Burleson, but I prefer him in the infield.
Obviously with O’Neill and Carlson both out, you have to get creative, but Yepez isn’t creative he is destructive. The fact is two of their three best outfielders can’t stay off the IL for an extended time. Mercado helps, but there is still a hole you have to fill and so it’s either Donovan or Edman if you can or Burleson if you have no choice. Yepez must never be a choice in the OF ever again.
May 18, 2023 at 10:27 pm #221112I will choose defense over offense every time. We have plenty of offense generated by our IF. We just need solid defense in the OF considering we play in a big ballpark and have a pitch contact staff.
