The SP’ing needs to provide a little hope, Bling. After a day off at the end of this 3 game series at Wrigley, the Cardinals play 19 games before another off day. The end of that 19 game stretch will dictate whether or not there’s hope.
It seems like we had some good fortune last night, in addition to playing well. That helps.
I think a team is not usually going to win if it gives up 6 walks, but we did. The Cubs got their run in the inning we gave them 3 walks. Only one scored thanks to the Donovan/Knizner play at the plate to complete a double play. We only got 2 walks but they both scored, thanks to some hitting that was timely for a change. 5 hits is not a lot, but it can be enough if they are timely.
Another thing that mattered was playing good defense. We’ve had trouble with infield errors and outfield playable plays not made. We stayed away from all that. A team that can turn in a sharply played game will have a chance most of the time.
The 96 pitches to get through 4.1 innings is the red flag though. That from one of the supposedly best starters we’ve got. We aren’t going to put together a hot streak with 4-5 inning starts day after day. Whether changing out the catcher helps with that remains to be seen. What surely does help is when your pen throws triple digits at them for multiple innings. The good version of those guys is really good, but they can’t do that day after day. It seems like OliMo did a good job managing the pen. He had his big guns available and they were all on. That can make a manager look good, but that’s not going to happen every day.
