As I have said before I think getting outs in the 9th inning is different than the 7th or 8th. The analytics may say that all innings are created equal but I would disagree. It is easier to look better in the setup innings. We currently don’t have any reliever with the gumption for the 9th, but hey it was just refreshing to finally have a chance for a blown save.

I think the last time we saw Helsley in the 9th, he gave up a moon shot game winning home run to Blake Sabol who is not exactly known as a prolific hitter. I am not sure if he has recovered from his meltdown in last years playoffs. Gallegos has decent stuff but probably better suited to be a setup man.

This season just seems to be a perfect storm of management not doing enough in the off season to bolster the starting pitching, and only going after 1 hitter (Contreras) when at least one more bat was desperately needed. Though it looks pretty evident they may have been hamstrung by a tight-fisted owner not wanting to spend any $$, then you have the Manager making some questionable decisions with personnel, lineups and game management and the players absolutely not performing.

After tonight’s game, maybe the Cards should adorn their uniforms with another patch — a Murphy’s Law patch. You know stuff is going to happen, you just don’t know exactly how it will happen.

Ah, that pervasive odor of failure continues to spread and strengthen. It won’t be long now before we no longer notice. It will have become an integral part of the Cardinal nature and we’ll have been transformed into modern-day versions of those old Washington Senators fans.

This team is about the worst I’ve seen at keeping a close lead. The pitching seems allergic to it. Starters and bullpen both. It’s unreal!

They have a run differential of -19 and have now the worst record in the league. It ain’t great but it possibly shows we aren’t as bad as our record indicates.

Oli better light a fire quick because he’s in real trouble. He may barely last past the weekend if the Tigers come in and take the series.

Gallegos probably has a spin rate that’ll knock your socks off.

We miss Yadi more than most think..! He was a much better game caller than our current catcher.
And with the pitch clock, shaking off and getting a new sign only puts more pressure on the pitcher as the clocks ticks down to zero.

when our lead off guy is 0-4 and hitting a dismal .214. this doesn’t exactly set the tone…!!
    Nootbar .214
    Burleson .220
    Oneil .239
We need better hitters. certainly it was Gio last night, but leaving a guy on 3rd base with no outs, should not happen.

Helmsley got 4 outs with 10 pitches. Having seen that, Oli went with someone else for the 9th. Why? We are seeing systemic failure revealing itself before our eyes.

But the new patch looks nice.

Batting average is not the best way to assess a leadoff man, but all of Nootbaar’s key measures have been sliding.

Because the computer told him to.

The chip on Marmol’s shoulder and his arrogance is wearing thin.

The computer doesn’t know how to factor in the risk of bringing in a guy who may or may not be on that day. Versus staying with a guy who is on and not near his pitch count limit.factoring in that risk is the manager’s job, but it’s probably the sort of thing that got Schildt fired despite winning.

He’s what 36? Won the crappiest division in baseball last year and now he bristles when ‘questioned’ and answers questions with questions, lol

Sorry but he hasn’t earned the right to be a cranky, cantankerous ‘old man’ yet.

After he pulled Hicks last night and Hicks was off by himself pouting he went over to say something to Hicks and Hicks ignored him. It was on camera.

I have no idea what the climate in the locker room is but if I was a betting man – and I am – I’d bet it is ‘stiff’ at best and heading towards toxic at worst.

Winning would probably solve most of what ails the Cardinals but O’Neil and maybe Hicks might get traded since they have been involved in ‘dust ups’ with authority figures.

I believe we entered the top of 9th leading 4 to 3, despite having been outhit 9 to 7. Had we shut them down in the top of the 9th that would have been a great win. Winning despite being out hit.
I think some of you are starting to grasp the urgency of the problem. 10 games under .500 is not a good situation. However, clubs can and do recover from this level. 17, 18, or more games under .500 and it really gets dicey. What if you go 30 – 15? You don’t even get to .500
