I didn’t see any blame placed on the Redbird field manager for last night’s loss. And in my view, he had absolutely no influence on the unfortunate outcome. However, I thought his comment concerning the sort of loss that his team suffered last night would serve the team extremely well was a patently silly thing to say. I’ll say that it didn’t and won’t serve the team well, but that’s just my own view. Helsley and Eddie were the primary contributors to last night’s loss, but I wouldn’t say that the rookie guessed right when he ripped the game winner over the CF wall. Helsley had shown him that precise same pitch twice before throwing it a third time while ahead in the count at 1-2. If he was going to throw it again, he should have buried it at least once before simply going to his best pitch, the fastball, to put the rookie away. And it makes no difference who called for the pitch that left the ballpark. Helsley is the guy who holds the baseball so, ultimately what comes out of his hand is his decision alone and is the simple reason that not only the 2 ER’s, but also the blown save and the loss go into the books as belonging to him.
Woodford allowed the runner to reach base in the form of what was ruled a hit. Therefore, he’s responsible for that runner being on base. 1td, agree that the run is charged to Woody, but Lee’s question was whether it was earned or unearned. It was ruled an earned run because it would have scored without the errors anyway (scorekeeper’s judgement). That is the key for determining earned vs unearned. Does the run score without the error(s)? It would have been an unearned run charged to Woody had he struck out the next two batters after the errors, because the run wouldn’t have scored without the errors.
Well we need Matz to step up and stop the bleeding tonight. Normally I would say that tonight’s starter does not give me much confidence but in the spirit of jnevel’s request for positive vibes here is to six strong innings from Matz, a breakout performance by the offense, nine innings of error free baseball, and three lockdown innings by the bullpen.
Speaking of the bullpen will all of the normal 7-9 guys be available tonight since they were used last night? I would vote yes since we are desperate for a victory. They can rest later.

I always try to remember to determine whether an inning would have continued without an E being charged to a fielder. The pitcher could then serve up multiple taters in a row and not be charged with a solitary ER. That seems awfully charitable, but that’s simply the way our world turns…Haha!
Thank you team for sticking with the confidence. We will win tonight. And hopefully that energy catapults is to something like 16-4 over the next 20 games. There is no question that this team can do that. They just need to play together and make it happen.
Matz has 3 good outings in a row from our other starters to show him the way. He can make it 4 in a row tonight.
Its a lopsided pitching matchup tonight. Matz has looked pretty bad all 4 times out so far. ERA, Whip, FIP all way high. Their guy DeSclafani has been a lot better. But who knows. Matz is overdue. He had two quality starts last May before the injury, and was on his way to one in his one game return before the second injury. So he has it in him, or did.
I’m always up for some optimism, so I’m on board for the rah rah until the next loss. I say Matz improves his record to 1-3, the boys make it one in a row, and remain tied for last rather than in it all alone. Go Cards.

I think the problem may be that we have not focused enough attention on din din. It has caused an imbalance in the sang froid of the universe. So I will say I am having a brat with kraut, red onion and brown mustard. There is some vinegar potato salad and red cabbage slaw to go with it. And a grape Nehi.

True, you could give up 100 HRs in a row and they’d all be unearned.
That situation can bring up a statistical discrepancy in total team earned runs vs the sum of all the earned runs by the team’s individual pitchers. An example would be if a pitcher retires the first two batters, then the third reaches on an error. That pitcher and the team cannot be charged with an earned run that inning no matter what happens thereafter. However, the manager could bring in a reliever to finish the inning. Then the reliever gives up 2 HRs. Those runs are unearned for the team stats, but not for the reliever’s individual stats.
That happened the other night with VerHagen I believe. Currently, the Cardinals as a team have given up 106 earned runs, but the sum of earned runs by all individual pitchers is 109.
Another weird one is passed ball vs wild pitch. Runner on 3B scores on a passed ball. Very next pitch is a K to end the inning. That is an unearned run. Had the runner scored on a wild pitch, it would be an earned run (if there’s no other reason to make it unearned).
Right call to send Walker down. But do not understand the fascination with Motter.
I agree Oliver. Walker being sent down is the right call but why not bring up Yepez or Mercado? Not sure what Motter brings to the table.
Ok Euro. If we lose anytime in the next . . . Let’s say 4 games (I think that’s fair) then I’m fired for having a crappy idea. I’m not sure what that looks like on this forum. Maybe you folks get to incessantly bash all of my thoughts for the next 30 days? Maybe Brian just kicks me out for good and keeps my paid membership? I don’t know. Open for suggestions. And if it does work, then I have a feeling that we’re going to have a lot of fun together over the next 10 games or so. Either way you guys win!
I think Motter is just in that last position on the roster that doesn’t matter and they’d prefer he hang out on the bench over Yepez doing so. If we had a speedy guy on the 40 man, then it could have gone to him I guess for pinch running purposes, but we don’t. So Motter will waste away on the bench. I think that could be DeJong, but at least for now, his bat is working. Let’s hope that continues.
I do think this is the right thing for Walker. He just isn’t ready to play the outfield yet. If the team was winning (like we are about to be), then he could have stayed. But our record is ugly and right now we need the better defense.
Jnevel, I’m not sure what it would look like either. Previous years, Pugs (where is he?) said a few times during his PBP there was a firm rule that you could have just one beer per inning, and if you went over the limit Brian would deal with you harshly. I never read about any punishments being carried out and even admitted that I might’ve had a couple Scotches one inning. I’m not sure if Scotch counts, but I’m still here, lol.
By the way, when I was at Memphis the other day I watched a nonchalant Yepez put together 3 terrible at bats in a row. And, he had generally been terrible at Memphis so far this year. So when he was standing in the batters box for his third at bat I looked him in the face and stared at him and he looked at me and then looked back and then looked at me again and I mouthed “Do your job” to him and he looked away and then looked back one more time and we just stared at each other for a moment. Then he got into the batters box and hit a double off the wall in right. And he stopped looking nonchalant. Then he proceeded to go 3 for 4 the next day with a double and a homer. And, he had 2 hits again yesterday. I’m not really suggesting that I had anything to do with it. But it’s fun to just throw out there. I really hope he finds it again. He just lost it at some point last year. We sure could use another big bat.
Lots of guys look good in AA. The whole thing with beaming up was ridiculous anyway.
I am more surprised that Burleson is struggling so much, but I guess opponents have figured him out. His defense is a detriment, so if he’s not hitting up a storm he’s doing more harm than good. Lets hope he adjusts. If not, we know Yepez can hit some at this level.
I think Motter is a guy they aren’t worried about finding AB’s for. With all the line up shuffling Oli has been trying to find ways to keep everyone getting time. With Motter they can let him sit and get some occasional time when they can or have to and not feel like he needs forced in over someone else, like they would be with Walker or Yepez. So when they finally trade O’Neill they can bring Yepez or Walker back.
I still think Mercado should have been brought up over Motter. At least he would be a good late inning defensive replacement in the OF but whatever.
Carlson is definitely a question mark. Wasn’t he the number 1 prospect at one time, maybe ahead of Arozarena even? He and to a lesser extent O’Neill are two guys I thought would be stars by now.
But it seems in order to be a star, you need to be traded. Guys we trade or get rid of in some manner seem to become stars and guys we keep seem to be perceptually potential stars, that don’t quite get there.
Maybe that is because we tend to have managers who never play guys consistently. Our managers think guys can’t hit certain pitchers, or can’t do this or that right, so they constantly change lineups around and play guys a game here and a game there, and they never get the reps nor confidence since the manager has little confidence in them.
