Maybe ERA’s the best way, BW. Heck, I don’t know. Even CY lost 316 of them…I’m entirely certain of one thing. A shutout is always better than a no-hitter…

Well, Oliver, the presence of patience is certainly one of Marmol’s attributes. Particularly when the challenge clock’s been activated…

Personally I think a won loss can be an effective way to evaluate a pitcher. It’s not the only measure but if a guy consistently has more wins than losses regardless of team then I figure he’s a pretty good pitcher

You have to take all that with a grain of salt willie. Nobody ever says W-L record doesn’t matter when they’re talking about somebody who just went 17-6. Its sort of like the only people who say money can’t buy happiness are people with no money. I’ll take the winners, somebody else can have the losers.

Here is a fun quote from an article entitled “Why Pitcher Win-Loss Records Have Lost Significance”.

“Personally, I think they know only too well that the “best” pitcher is not always the one who has the most wins. They just want to grouse that those stupid dorks in they mama basement and their endless stupid acronyms are explaining why the ancient standards aren’t totally appropriate for evaluating the modern game…”

The best part is that it was written 14 years ago. Change is hard.

This factoid is surprising to me. Cards up 1-0 in the first on Edman’s homer.

An aside in Chi-town, after getting down 0-7 the Cubs have come back 9-7 in the 3rd. How many times does that happen in a year?

Tommy Edman 41st career Cardinal HR-tied for 81st on Cardinals all-time list

3 more and he ties David Freese.

The guy I most miss off the Cards is Goldie-Locks. He went to the Yanks. The fastest center-fielder and most exciting since Curtis Flood. Now he’s a star in NY, I guess, probably making more money, and has to beat women off with a stick…. What a life eh?

Leaving runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd is an ominous sign.

W/L is a symptom of pitching, but it’s not a good measuring stick. It’s like trying to measure how sick someone is by how many times they coughed. Sure, it’s kind of related. But there are lots of better measurements. We’ve all seen a reliever get a win after coming into a game for the last out of an inning, allow 4 runs in that 1/3 of an inning, but then have his team score 6 runs in the next half inning and he gets credit for a win. Conversely, we’ve seen a pitcher throw 9 innings and give up 2 hits and take a loss. Wins and losses can be extremely arbitrary.

Ultimately, there’s no one way to measure a pitcher. Just like there’s no one way to measure an illness. You need lots of data. And that’s what all those geeks are out there trying to collect. But no matter how much data you gather, you just need to be humble and realize that you’ll never truly ever have the complete picture. No decision will ever be 100%. That’s what makes it still fun. Play the odds. Or choose to go against the odds and sometimes look brilliant (or more often dumb like Ollie pinch hitting for Donovan). Because baseball is slow-paced, we all get to make these decisions along with the manager in real time. It’s fun. It’s infuriating. And that’s why I love it.

Did bikemike change his mind and go to the game tonight? I’m guessing he showed up in the top of the 5th.

This is becoming ridiculous! Looks like the same game over and over! Our starting pitching is terrible!

I wish someone would tell them wins doesn’t matter, jeesh, what is Oli waiting for.

They obviously don’t matter to the 2023 Cardinals.

That’s cruel to leave Mikolas in there to cook.

I think the Cards need to make an immediate change at pitching coach.

The entire staff is a disaster.

They need to swap Walker & Contreras in the batting order. Doesn’t do anything for pitching, but it should improve the offense.

I bet most of us were even faster than Oli last night on the replay request. And most woulda been faster to yank Mikolas tonight but it really doesn’t matter, so maybe just save the arms so early in the game. At least it’s not as bad as Mikolas’ last Coors outing where he gave up 10 earned runs and 14 hits in less than 2 and 2/3 innings.

They mentioned earlier that Carlson has a neck issue but is on the bench. Hicks is back at the hotel with a virus. Guys on any kind of bubble need to keep their mouth shut unless there is too much blood to conceal. This team is hard to stomach.

I know Oli bashing is en vogue but when is the last time the Cardinals had a rotation this bad? Seriously, I am not sure. 2007 maybe?

I think Marmol is an inexperienced guy who may or may not be in over his head (we did win 93 games last year) but he should have been given more seasoning before landing in the big chair. Our front office insists on only hiring rookie managers so we shouldn’t forget that either.

Despite that I don’t think a combination of Herzog, LaRussa, Earl Weaver, Sparky Anderson, and Walter Alston could win with this rotation. It is complete garbage.

It’s hard to be a baseball fan when every year it’s mostly a whole new team. What are you supposed to be loyal to? The logo?. The Park? The owner-managers?

Walker muscling the inside pitch past the SS was impressive.

Overall, I thought Mikolas had pretty good location of his pitches tonight. But he seemed to lose a couple miles per hour on his fastball as the game went on. Going from 94 to 91 is not good. At 91, he has to be far more perfect.

It’s so frustrating. Matz was cruising along ok last night too and then the wheels came off. Deja vu. All I know is this sucks.
