On the telecast they said a knee contusion, bccran. I felt a pain in my right knee when I saw it happen… I’m sure they’ll give their $87M man a thorough going over to look for any fracture or ligament damage.

Caray posed the question of who would man up behind HP in the event of an injury to Knizner in today’s game. Thompson answered that he would guess Donovan. I would have rather forfeited the game…

I’m not sure what Schneider was thinking when he let his pitcher work to Nado with 1st base open in the 8th. He’s fortunate to get a pass on that question. At any rate, I hope he does it again.

Welp. Lots of bloops and duck snorts in Toronto’s 19 hits but oh my the offense looks really, really good.

    Is Gallegos injured?

I wondered what the heck Hicks was doing on the mound in the 8th and asked if Gio or Helsley was unavailable. Just checked and found this quote:

Gallegos was unavailable for Thursday’s game against Toronto due to a back injury, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Manager Oliver Marmol termed the injury as a “tweak,” and it appears that Gallegos will be able to avoid a stint on the injured list. The Cardinals have a day off Friday, so it’s possible he doesn’t miss any additional time.

One day in and we are tied for last place.

Are we still going with Flaherty Saturday?

    Ha ha.

I won’t sweat it unless the Cards go to 0-2 – then the season will be over.

One of those that could have gone either way. Tough to go into the 9th at home with a lead, and have your closer walk the lead off guy in four pitches. That is just asking for trouble.

You see those statistics sometimes where a team is say 50-3 when leading after 8, and we are already 0-1. Also Helsley had a guy 0 and 2 and a graphic came on the screen showing that in 2022 opponents hit something like .090 against him when he was ahead 0 and 2. And just like that the guy got a hit.

Toronto definitely had some breaks with a lot of off balance swings where the ball fell in for a hit. But then that just shows it is not all about home runs – stay away from the strikeout and good things can happen.

As for the long run, no way to tell. Can’t say our pitching is bad from one game. It was bad yesterday, but time will tell how things play out. At the same time, we cannot say the offense is great. They were great yesterday, with some missed opportunities.

Again, I will take a split in these first six with the quality of the opponent we are facing.

Yeah, squandering a lead in the last inning is always painful, but at the same time, those last 3 outs seem to be as hard to get as is a date with Princess Grace…Closers are a set all to themselves in the sense that I view them as way more susceptible to the hazards of the state of mind after they’re victimized by a couple of bad outings and in his last two attempts at a save, Helsley has certainly been victimized. He had all winter to think about the blown save that occured prior to the one he was saddled with yesterday. So did I…

Most definately good news. Especially after witnessing Knizner’s sac-bunt attempt.

I’d be real surprised if Contreras is available for either of the 2 remaining games with Toronto and a little surprised if he’s able to play at all for the reminder of this season opening homestand. I’m wondering if the Cardinals are willing to gamble with the presense of Knizner as the only credible option at the C position? As we all know, and were reminded of yesterday, bad things happen in a hurry in the immediate area behind HP.

Well, it all depends on if he’s a man or a mouse. If he can’t tough it out behind the plate in an emergency, then they need to get somebody here to back up Knizner.

Bicyclemike said it right. Let’s just let things play out here. The only bad thing about losing to me is we are already behind the cubs. Giving them five minutes to crow is too much to me

Yeah Bling, sometimes it seemed as though you couldn’t get Molina out of there with an axe. Those days are over. In any event, I heard B. Thompson say during the broadcast of yesterday’s game after Contreras had departed, that if anything happened to Knizner that would force him out of the remainder of the game, in all probability the catching duties would be delegated to Donovan…At the instant he said it I foolishly damaged one of Mrs. 1TD’s lamp shades when I heaved my Coca Cola across the room…

I’m sure Our Ollie wouldn’t risk Donovan behind the plate. Those guys are probably reading media notes from this time last year when Donovan was the end of the bench guy. My guess is Motter.

Yeah Willie, those Cubbie fans are probably already convinced that their team’s been launched out of a silo and aimed straight for the parade.

I was also thinking of Motter even before Thompson said anything simply because I imagined he’d volunteer for a suicide mission as a gesture to his allegiance…

I was amazed to find that Motter has played every position in the minor leagues – except catcher. He even pitched once. I guess his first would be in the majors!

I also learned his nickname is La Pesadilla – The Nightmare!

If he’s never done it, it probably would be a nightmare.

I had forgotten that tomorrow is an early afternoon game. I also happened to notice that the Cardinals faced Toronto SP’er Gausman twice last season. He pitched well enough to be the winning pitcher of decision in his first turn against the Cardinals last year, but got touched up real good by Redbird hitters the second time they faced him. Hopefully he gets scorched again early to give Mr. Jack a large bankroll to work with.

I looked Motter up when it became apparent that he had a chance to make the Big League roster, Bling, and although I recall seeing him all around the IF, I don’t think I ever saw a C next to his name, but I could be wrong.

I wonder if he moonlights for Vince McMahon in the WWE?
