    Game day! Let’s go Cards!

Ok, I know there are 161 more of these to go after today, but October baseball is the goal. Let’s go!

Well, it’s almost time for some long awaited Redbird baseball action, so as a precursor to the opening day first pitch, a little pregame opening day Cardinal baseball trivia action’s in order before we get underway with the 2023 edition of the St. Louis, Cardinals. As always, the correct answers will qualify all of the elite TCN baseball experts for a chance to be a finalist to take home a treasured hand stitched and meticulously crafted Bill Buckner autographed oven mitt.

    1. All time great Cardinal HOF pitcher Bob Gibson is the Redbird record holder for opening day starts with 10 of them. In April of 1965 he made the first opening day start of his legendary career against former Cardinal pitcher Larry Jackson and the Cubs at Wrigley Field. What was the rare outcome of this 11 inning opening day game? Hint…Think Wrigley Field.

    2. There were a total of 6 future HOF players who played in that April of 1965 opening day Cardinals/Cubs game. One of them made his Big League debut in that game. Who was he? Bonus points if you can name all 6 HOF players. Hint…Bob Uecker wasn’t one of them.

    3. The Cardinal roster in 1965 included two players who would each father a son. Each of those two sons would eventually have an impact on both a Cardinal WS win and a Cardinal WS loss. Who were those two players on the 1965 Redbird roster who fathered those two sons? Hint…Think former Cardinal pitcher Scott Terry.

As always, cheating in the form of looking up the answers prior to submitting them could very well create the genuine possibilty of an evil baseball gypsy surreptitiously dropping a spider into your $20 hot dog…

    Play Ball and GO REDBIRDS!

Hopefully we can get off to a good start by winning two of three but I have to say that the Blue Jays appear to be a very very good team. Some have projected them to win the NL East or at least be a wild card team. The Redbirds had better bring their A game to take down these Bluebirds.

Man, how far has Dylan Carlson’s stock fallen? Beaten out by the formerly unspectacular and oddly named Lars Nootbaar, and a 20 year old rookie.

    Great questions 1TD!

On the trivia, let’s see. That opening game might have been called due to darkness. I will go with that.

Six Hall of Famers – how about Brock, Gibson, Williams, Santo, Banks and…..man, Carlton??

Dad’s of sons. Thinking one was Ed Spiezio. The other, maybe Bob Kennedy as Cubs manager?

Oh wait – the Cardinal roster feature the dad’s. So I will go with Spiezio and Julian Javier.

Nice, BikeMike…You aced almost the entire field of play! That opening game was indeed called due to darkness after 11 innings and ended in an 11-11 tie. Uncharacteistically, Gibson was staked to an early 5-0 lead, but the Cubs came roaring back and Gibson was removed after only 3.1 innings of work. Carlton made his Big League debut in that opening day game and worked to only one hitter who he BB’d after which new Redbird manager Red Schoendienst went and got him. You aced all of the HOF’ers. Three for each team. You got the first half of the last question right, but the other guy was Tito Francona, hence the reference to Scott Terry in the hint. Scott Spezio for the Redbird WS win in ’06 and Terry Francona the Red Sox manager in the ’04 Redbird WS loss. In any event, nice going, my friend! You get the special edition Buckner oven mitt that has the daisy and butterfly pattern…Haha!

Haha…Wainwright performs the National Anthem! I predicted it would be The Nootz billed as “Wayne Nooton”…I wasn’t even close!

Very true Mike. A classic story of from the penthouse to the outhouse in a hurry.

A lot of publications are picking Nado as a favorite for the NL MVP award this season. I sure wouldn’t count him out, but let’s all hope he has some intense competition from the guy who occupies the other side of the Redbird IF corner positions.

Wow, nice 1TD. Loos forward to displaying the special edition oven mitt!!

Yeah, I was no sure how Stan Javier played into a WS loss for us, but totally forgot that Tito Francona was on our club that year.

A Francona related note – in 1966 our family took a vacation to see my mom’s family in Georgia. On the way we spent a night in St Louis, and my dad and I went a game versu the Pirates. I was a kid and looking forward to seeing the newly acquired Orlando Cepeda, but to my disappointment Red played Francona at first that night!! 🤪

Haha! I recall you once telling that sad story, BikeMike. I would have been bummed out too! ChaCha was my favorite Cardinal position player back then. I was sick for a week when he was traded for Torre.

I always liked watching Brandon Belt play baseball unless it was against the Cardinals.

Alcantara and Gallen getting opening days starts, while we have Mikolas. We may not win a game this year. 😏

I picked up a couple of Bichette rookies cards this past winter. Might be good investments.

Yeah Bling, I’m real surprised he’s in RF. Afternoon game with the sun and all. Not at all sure about the judgement rendered that placed him there.
