Not a good start at all – pitches were not close.
March 30, 2023 at 6:48 pm #215063Man, oh and two and you feel good. Let’s him off the hook. Now he has to be careful and not over throw trying to to get a K.
What is it with Springer and all these dunkers??

stlcard25ParticipantHelsley looking very shaky today. Well, the whole staff has looked shaky. Going to be lucky to not be trailing now.
March 30, 2023 at 6:53 pm #215065Helsley at 19 pitches and still has not gotten an out. Just got one on the 20th pitch.
Toronto with the lead. That lead off walk really hurt.
Jays with a ton of hits, but some of them were really cheap-o’s. Still you put the ball in play and that can happen. It shows you don’t always need the long ball.
March 30, 2023 at 6:56 pm #21506634 hits. I want to see at least 3 more.
March 30, 2023 at 6:59 pm #215067Edman looks bad flailing at that pitch down and out of the zone. Man, that pitch to Donovan was at outside.
Romano doing what you have to do though – get the ball and throw (mostly) strikes. Makes all the difference.
March 30, 2023 at 6:59 pm #215068He sure did and it sure was.
March 30, 2023 at 6:59 pm #215069Goodness, what does HP ump ass have against Donovan? That’s two way off the plate.
March 30, 2023 at 7:03 pm #215070Not to worry. 161 games to go. Back at em on Saturday.
March 30, 2023 at 7:04 pm #215071Frustrating loss to open the season. Jays defense kept them close, and they took advantage of those dinks and dunks. Our pitching was not good. Offense looked good though. Using Hicks in the 8th seemed odd.
March 30, 2023 at 7:05 pm #215072Someone needs to teach o’neill the proper way to set himself up to make a throw. Maybe j.edmond could give the lesson. Then again maybe the cards should employ someone that knows how to play the position. How is it that Olly puts up with such crap.
March 30, 2023 at 7:06 pm #215073Whole bullpen is trash. Good lord this is going to be a long season. My goodness.

ParticipantWell bad day. I recorded game but cable screwing up, couldn’t watch that. Tried to reset when I got home but cable still crappy. Watched best I could. Some great positives but still came up short. I guess our pitching wasn’t the best but you could say the same for theirs. In the end, that’s how it goes.
March 30, 2023 at 7:14 pm #215075March 30, 2023 at 7:16 pm #215076Hey Willie, you had the same problem I had with the game sorta coming and going. You wouldn’t have resort cable for ur provider would you? If not I was wrong for blaming them for the poor service.
March 30, 2023 at 7:17 pm #215077Donovan took 3 called strikes today. Check that, it was 5 according to HP ump IASSogna. Unfortunately, the bad calls were in key spots and really altered his ABs. Bring on the robo umps and go get ’em tomorrow!

jj-cf-stlParticipantJust 10 ER allowed? Good thing we beefed up the pitching this winter!
Star – Arenado
Goats – Mikolas, Hicks and HelsleyMarch 30, 2023 at 7:25 pm #2150791982 willie
ParticipantI have spectrum cable. It’s been giving me issues but was working fine before I went to bed but not today
March 30, 2023 at 7:27 pm #215080Gonna be a long season with this pitching staff! On the other hand lots of fun high scoring games coming! When our closer starts the 9th with a 4 pitch walk you just kinda hang your head! Hicks is not good, period!
March 30, 2023 at 7:38 pm #215081Here are a few observations:
We scored 9 vs a good team with a legit starter. That is very encouraging.
You can’t win when the starter and closer both fail.
A catcher is asking for it putting his leg on the ground like that. Reminded me of Tony Pena, if anybody else remembers that far back.
I noticed O’Neill and Walker both fail to get into position to throw even though there was time and they knew a throw would have to be made. Maybe its from playing out of position, but small things matter.
It was pretty clear Walker was facing better pitching than he’s used to. Two levels better. He contributed, but didn’t look good a couple other times when he had a chance to contribute big. I think they’re going to find holes and exploit them. He’s got a tough job ahead adapting to the bigs. Meanwhile, hopefully he can punish the occasional mistake.
I think its going to be a long season with Verhagen. It already is.
March 30, 2023 at 7:50 pm #215082Biggest fears over the offseason is that the pitching wasn’t going to be very good…they showed today that the pitching might be worse than not very good….this is a 90 win offense with a 70 win pitching….
March 30, 2023 at 8:24 pm #215083Not going to win many if any games with 10 runs against, but I can’t remember the last time I saw so many base hits fall in that looked to have an “exit velocity” less than the radar reading of my running speed.
March 30, 2023 at 8:44 pm #215084It is difficult to make any conclusions after just one game but I think many of us have been concerned about this pitching staff for awhile and those concerns aren’t going away. We may have to slug our way through the first four months and see if Mo can do his annual dumpster dive at the deadline for pitching reinforcements.

ParticipantAny word on Contreras?
March 30, 2023 at 8:48 pm #215086Yeah, that may be the course this ship has set sail on, gscottar. At any rate, I’ve heard it said that it’s pointless to glance at the standings until Labor Day…Haha!
