Good pitching staff. Would still like them to sign Quintana.

I felt like Matz was about to bust out and turn into a great acquisition. Then he got injured on the goofiest looking play you’ll ever see on fielding a simple ground ball.

Figuring out how Matz fits in compared to Hudson is like rearranging the deck chairs in the wake of an iceberg encounter. Getting a top tier starter is the best answer. That’s like getting five new pitchers, i.e., 1 though 5 all get better in one fell swoop.

I don’t know about the need for swing and miss stuff. I thought they wanted ground ball guys to take advantage of the infield defense. Maybe they don’t know what they want, or maybe they want what the computer tells then they want.

Our biggest problem is having enough guys who can answer the bell so that is what they need to address. We have to try getting starts from minor league guys, or bring up guys with too little time in AAA, and when that doesn’t work or isn’t enough, Mo has to either dumpster dive or trade valuable talent at the deadline.

They would be crazy not to do their utmost to sign Quintana, and try to find another guy like him. Matz was that kind of pick up. He had been reliable until this year. What we don’t need is to go into ST counting on a laundry list of guys who have proven to be unreliable due to either injury or performance. And if somebody is a .500 pitcher at Memphis don’t write them into the rotation in ink like we did with Liberatore.

We have different definitions of reliable.

2018-2021, he pitched more innings than anyone on our staff. That seems pretty reliable.

He has averaged 118 innings/year for his career. I would say that 2018-2021 were much better than 2015-2017 but when I think of reliable I think of 35 starts and between 180-200 innings. Maybe that is too much to ask anymore.

It’s what we’d all like, but it’s not a realistic definition of a reliable starter. Again, the signing may not work out but I don’t think it can be judged based on one year. We signed him for #5 starter money and I think he will end up giving him that. His salary doesn’t prevent us from doing anything we want for 2023 or beyond.

I don’t think we signed him for #5 starter money. I could think of many number 5 starters who make less than an $11M AAV. A number 5 starter contract is what Quintana was on last year.

Quintana was signed by the Pirates, who don’t swim in the same waters at St Louis. That contract was a complete shot in the dark for a non contending team. For a contender like St Louis, $11M is #5 starter money. Waino and Mikolas are #3s and get $17-18M. #2s go for $20-25M. #1s go for $30M and up.

Maybe so, you be the judge. The last time anybody made 35 starts was 2018 and that was one guy. 27 guys in all MLB pitched 180+ innings this year. Last year it was only 20.

I did a search on Fangraphs for Games started and innings pitched 2018 thru 2021 seasons. Matz was 45th in MLB in starts and 34th in innings pitched. I don’t remember if I excluded post season from the data set.

“I don’t know about the need for swing and miss stuff.”

BB, here’s a recent example. With a 2-0 lead over PHI in game 1, and two outs to get in the top of the 9th, to seal the win, Philly sent their next eight batters to the plate and none K’d. They had scored 6 runs on five balls in play, 2 BB’s and one HBP.

I’d have preferred two K’s, to end the game.

K’s are almost as good as taters when you really need them. K’s are no joke. Almost like fighter jets.

I’d say nowadays that arbitration decisions eclipse the WS. That’s a shame.

When we are batting in a high leverage situations, we want our batters to put the ball in play, and we praise them in the GT’s with atta-boys, for doing so.

So, if contact is desirable for our batters, how does it become desirable for our pitchers? Do we really want Helsley to be more contact friendly? Of course not.

“Pitch to contact” is the poor mans way of building a pitching staff. K’s cost the big bucks.

jj I meant I don’t know what Mo is thinking with the swing and miss, because the last I knew he was focused on ground ball pitchers. Maybe he changed his mind.

Everyone knows that Mr. Mo is thinking that he’s not retired yet and that his primary purpose in life continues to be to please those who mold his mouth.

Weird stats. Cardinal pitchers ranked last in Ks, 16th in hits given, 16th in WHIP, and 10th in ERA.

Weird because the ERA is better than the others listed?

If that’s what you meant I’d point at HR% allowed, 27th. Home stadium effect and ground out / fly out ratio, first in baseball. The opposition was forced to chain hits.

So even with the high WHIP many of the base runners allowed were eliminated by first in DP’s turned and DP%. Sparkling D would still matter even if the staff went from 27th to 15th in K%.

Matz’s career didn’t begin in 2018 by the way.

    2010 Tommy John Surgery
    2015 Muscle Tear
    2015 Shoulder Spasms
    2016 Elbow Bone Spur
    2016 Shoulder Impingement
    2017 Elbow Inflammation
    2017 Elbow Lunar Nerve Irritation
    2018 Elbow Flexor Strain
    2020 Shoulder Discomfort
    2021 Covid 19
    2022 Shoulder Impingement
    2022 Knee Injury

That makes sense but the Giants and Dodgers sign number 4 and 5 types all the time to cheapish one or two year deals. The 4 years probably bothers me more on the Matz deal than the AAV. It just gives me a Brett Cecil vibe.

    I’d say so, Bling, but it’s a tremendous bargain for a 1.25 ERA guy…Haha!
