At that point anything can happen.
Getting to the WS has to be considered a big success.
I’d like to see each league go to 4 divisions with only champions advancing OR go to a 120 game regular season for seeding purposes and then let all but last place teams into ‘the tournament’.
One thing of note for the Phillies…they went 13-25 against the two juggernauts in their division. Apart from that, they were 74-50, pretty much even with the Cards, who feasted on the weak Central and were under .500 against the East. I think the superior team won…if that series were played 100 times, the Phillies probably win it 60 times.
Next year, the balanced schedule means 85-87 wins is the likely result with the same team simply due to the increased difficulty.
The Phillies have a top heavy rotation built for a short playoff series and the Cardinals have a more balanced rotation built for 162 games. I think the Phillies will get exposed as they play longer series.
STlCard25, right, it will also be harder for players to fatten up their stats feasting on Central Division weaklings.

Good point on the 2023 schedule, stlcard25. Total wins could be down. However, all the division opponents face the same issue so one might surmise the gap between the Cards and the others in the NLC would remain (with all else equal, which it never is)…
I wonder how much better the AL East teams will be next year. Toronto and Tampa Bay have to be delighted.

Yep, I think the Cards could well be the only team with a winning record in the Central next year.
Do teams in the same division play the same inter-league teams?
If not, in a tight divisional race 6-12 games against different opponents could very well be the difference.
Schedules need to be identical.

Yes, I am pretty sure they are the same. There might be some home/away differences though and each team will have their own distinct “rival”. I am not sure if they play the same intra-league schedule though. Some teams will be faced 6 times and others 7.
Under the collective bargaining agreement reached in March 2022, every team will play every other team regardless of league under a new balanced schedule. Teams will play 13 games against each of 4 opponents within its division (52 games), as well as 6 games each against 6 of the other 10 opponents within its own league and 7 games each against 4 of the other 10 opponents within its own league (64 games). Interleague play will consist of a four game home and home series against the geographic rival and a single three game series against the other 14 interleague opponents (46 games), with location to rotate every other year.
I know you can’t draw a direct line to extrapolate how things would have gone, but the Cards theoretically would have gone 90-72 had they played to the same level against the teams from the other divisions and interleague on the balanced schedule this year. So not a huge change, but it makes a difference. The Cards will actually play a couple less games vs the NL East and West compared to 2022 this coming year.
