Woodford is your 5th starter in the rotation!
    Miami is looking good.
    Hicks solid….stay healthy!

I like this pallante guy. I don’t know his situation but I think he could be good out of the bullpen. Has some great movement.

I have no problem with Woodford as the fifth starter. I’ve been touting him for a while as that. I think he will keep us in most games he pitches.

1982willie, you can read all about Pallante here. We have him ranked when most don’t (yet).

Thanks Brian. Some great info there. Will have to spend more time with it. Just my initial reaction. Seems like it’s too soon for him to make the big club. I just thought his stuff had the best movement I saw tonight anyway. I personally think he will either start at AAA or end up there fairly soon. I’m not sure if he shakes out as a starter long term though. I think this season in the minors will go along way in determining that

Jacob DeGrom scratched from Friday’s start due to shoulder tightness.

Just a few days away from Opening Day. Has Marmol announced who our closer is going to be? Or is it going to be a bullpen by committee situation?

From my reading of things, nothing said specifically, but I read it as there wasn’t going to be specific roles. Like they may bring hicks in the 8th if that’s when they think he’s needed. I don’t really have issues with trying to use a guy who would typically be your closer earlier however that tends to lead to maybe going ahead and leaving him in the next inning thus meaning you may have lost him for the next day or he gets brought in earlier and isn’t sharp and we end up with those same guys up in the 9th. I don’t care what anyone says, those last outs aren’t like the other outs even if they seem like they should be the same. But they aren’t. It’s like free throws in a basketball game. A free throw early doesn’t feel near the same as free throws late.

    Willie,
I assume it’s going to be Gallegos as the appointed closer. If not, then Hicks. I don’t really care as long as they get the job done. And I agree, the last outs are a different animal.

Marmol said he will go with the best reliever for the most important matchups even when earlier than the ninth.

I’d guess Helsey or Whitley would get the opportunity in 9th if Gallegos unavailable before Hicks in the first month of season. You don’t want to give Hicks a reason to throw 105mph while he is still learning to dial it down and trust his stuff. Just my opinion though.

I have learned to embrace more analytics over the years and can see some of their value but using your best reliever in the 7th inning just doesn’t feel right to me. So Gallegos comes in the 7th to get out of a bases loaded jam only to see Helsley blow it in the 9th? What have you accomplished?

No one will ever convince me that the last three outs are the same as any other outs. They aren’t. They require a different mentality.

I believe that facing the bases loaded in the seventh against the #3 hitter is more stressful and more important than pitching with the bases empty in the ninth against the 7-8-9 batters. But these are all contrived generalities.

Personally, I like that thought is being applied, not just using the same cookie-cutter formula in every situation.

But of course, there will still be failures as well as successes. You just hope to increase the latter and decrease the former over the long haul.

Haven’t the 7tb and 8th innings always been the proving ground for the ninth inning gig. You get the high-leverage opportunities but without the pressure of it being every time out. I see no reason to manage any other way. That way you always have three or four guys preparing to close.

You can make the opposite argument. If Helsley blows the 7th what does the 9th mean?

Only three more days – THREE! – and we will finally have our long awaited 1st game thread. And with that comes the din-din reports.

I am thinking that I might make myself some beef neckbones and potatoes Thursday morning. And maybe have picked up a banana cream pie from the Amish restaurant on Wednesday. Assuming, of course, I survive my doctor’s appt Wednesday afternoon with the hot Nurse Practitioner.

Sounds like a plan, Rat. I’m sure Cardinal In France and Bling have grandiose opening day din-din delights on tap too….. can’t wait to read of them! My Opening Day din-din spread is going to be textbook Americana. How does two dogs smothered in yellow mustard and raw onions, potato salad and an entire cinnamon apple pie topped with Breyer’s vanilla ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate sauce sound? Play ball!

I’m a bit hesitant this year. It seems some posters are irritated by non-baseball amusements in a serious baseball thread. I don’t want to offend anybody or infringe on the rules of commentary.

Once every week or two you think?

Hopefully less than every week or two. Goldy usually doesn’t need much time off, so hopefully Albert is a very rare first baseman.
