The Padres clobbered the Rockies in the patter’s last home game of 2022. Scoreboard watching I saw Milwaukee lost, so even with our defeat we knock the MN down to 4.
Just need one of the two against the Crew and we will just about have it wrapped up.
I just noticed there’s only 2 games scheduled in the entire NL tomorrow. Maybe that’s not too uncommon for a Monday?

The magic number is indeed 3, but the Cards will win the season series against the Brewers if they win one of two. If they win the season series, they win the division, so they would clinch even if the “magic number” would say 1.

1td, the magic number is 3. That means any combination of Cards wins and MIL losses equal to 3. So if the Cards beat the Brewers, that reduces the magic number to 1. However, one win by the Cards against MIL also clinches the division in this specific case.
That’s because the Cards currently lead the season series against MIL 9-8. So one win against MIL will also give the Cards the season series, which is the postseason tiebreaker. There is no Game 163 with the new playoff format. The magic number to tie is one less than the magic number to win, therefore the magic number to tie is 2. That all means the Cards will win the division with one win against MIL.
If MIL wins both games against StL, the Cards will need some combination of 3 wins in their other games or 3 losses by MIL in their other games.

I’m grateful this season’s last week or so is pretty cut and dried. I like the excitement of a down to the wire finish and all, but I also like to be almost guaranteed some bonus baseball for the Cardinals. I’m sure everyone remembers the last day of the 2011 regular season. It wasn’t just the Redbirds who got in on that last day. That was a wild finish on the last day of the schedule all the way around the entire Big Leagues!
We should remember the plot line from early in the season. Back then, the hope was that we would be less crappy than the rest of the Central Division, except probably the Brewers, and maybe win enough games against the weak competition to sneak in with the extra WC team this year. Well, the Brewers collapsed, and we got hot for a while after the break, but maybe despite the twists and turns the plot line has reemerged.
I guess a lot of things reemerge during the course of a season. One thing’s certain. If something reemerge’s, that means you’re still playing. So, I’d say let the twists and turns keep on coming for as long as they will…Haha!
The Cards are what they are. The Cubs, Reds, and Pirates took the year off and does appear that the moves at the deadline to shore up the starting rotation were just enough to squeeze out a division title.
Next year the line up will have to be addressed as there are just too many holes in this one. Pitching staff still won’t have a true 1 but maybe has three 2’s.
DeJong needs to go away, need a starting catcher, need an outfielder that can consistently produce at the plate and need Goldschmidt and Arenado to keep it rolling.
Yes, the Cardinals are not playing well right now and that is concerning for the playoffs. But regarding the season storyline, they have been better than expected.
If they win 6 of 8 remaining games (not crazy since 6 are with the Pirates), the Cards will have won 95 games. Even if they split, they’ll finish with 93 wins.
No one, and I mean no one, predicted 93-95 wins back in March, even as we knew then that the bottom three in the division would be bad.
Every Spring the prognosticators use their algorithms to pick the Cardinals to win 83-85 games and every year they are wrong.
