Like I said, we may very well lose four of five against the Reds. Doom City is right around the corner. If there’s ever a time that we need Flaherty to return to his old form it’s this Friday night game. And if Goldschmidt is ever going to get it going again we need it to happen now. Milwaukee is right on our heels and they got all the momentum.
I’ll miss most of this Friday night game as I will be at the Jasper football game. It’s the Evansville Mater Dei Wildcats visiting the Jasper Wildcats. Two fairly even teams so it should be a close game.
And din-din on Friday will be a trip to Lakeview, the Amish restaurant on the lake north of town. Catfish Fiddlers, mashed potatoes/gravy, noodles, dressing, sweet tea, and some vanilla soft serve ice cream for dessert.

I think it was Jim Edmonds gushing about what a warrior Mikolas is. Make me wretch some more, Jim. Warriors do what it takes to win. You don’t get a smiley face sticker on your folder for effort in MLB. Reality check: A losing record with a winning team. But “lack of run support”!! Cry me a river. Keep them off the board if you’re not getting run support, Mr. warrior. Don’t throw it all over the place, including right down broadway and get your head handed to you by a door mat.
Mikolas has done a decent job this year, but he’s becoming a clearer SP4 for the playoffs for me. I am curious to see if Flaherty can hold it together for the rest of the regular season, as that would be a nice addition to the playoff bullpen as a guy who can cover a few innings if needed.
Woodford, regression…? he goes 1 2/3, with 1 h, 1bb, and 0 runs! mmmm, doesn’t seem too bad.

Woodford was bailed out by Nootbaar’s great throw. He’s been fine in the bullpen but it’s fair…even wise…to not expect much more in the future. Hopefully he continues to beat the odds.

Oh, I know. A guy does well in mopup duty and he’s suddenly the next Max Scherzer. It’s amazing to me how many people blast Dakota Hudson (3.57 career ERA, 2.52 minors ERA, Texas League and Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year) and yet gush over Jake Woodford (3.85 career ERA, 3.86 minors ERA, basically no accolades).
They’re pretty much the same pitcher, with Hudson probably at least a notch better. We expect more from Dakota because he’s a starter, even though he’s coming back from injury. It’s the backup QB syndrome, I guess.

AAAA Jake does it again. Sure seems to rub some people the wrong way. Context? Regression to the mean after 2 ABs?

E. B and CC would be the only correct answer, Euro. Woodford is doing better than I thought he would, but he’s pretty much been handled with kid gloves. Even I have wondered why the Cards have deployed him as they have, as he’s probably earned a higher leverage role at this point. I’m happy that he’s been successful so far, but the track record indicates that this is likely an anomaly. Hopefully in 5 years we’ll look back and say that I was totally wrong.
stlcard25…I’m pretty sure Dak’s ’19 season in which he featured a W/L record of 16-7 and a nice looking 3.35 ERA is the primary reason for fans placing such high expectations on his ensuing performance. People sometimes overreact to disappointment. He did lead the NL in BB’s that season, which in my view has always been the foremost reason he sometimes struggles, but that’s the case with any pitcher. That ’19 season was his rookie year and I happened to notice he placed 5th in the ROY voting. I didn’t look to see who placed ahead of him for that award, but there must have been some really nice rookie performances in the NL that season to see 4 guys received more votes than he did for the award. In any event, he just turned 28 yesterday and I don’t forsee the Cardinals giving up on him anytime soon.
Yep, Hudson was solid in 2019 and looked even better early in 2020 before his injury. It’s sort of Michael Wacha-esque. Of course, Wacha is having a stellar year this year, so anything could happen. I’m hopeful that our pitching will become a strength again as we see the young guys move forward and take new roles on.

I was in the process of awarding the esteemed BikeMike a finely crafted, hand stitched, oven mitt autographed by the great Bill Buckner as 1st prize for correctly answering two baseball trivia questions when the thread suddenly crashed…Haha! In any event, he certainly deserved the one of a kind 1st prize as he aced both questions and soundly trounced our entire panel of distinguished experts…I’ve got a couple more stumpers ready for the fellas during the thread for tonight’s ballgame!

stlcard25…Yeah, Wacha sure is having a nice year. Man, I heard he was doing well, but just checked and I see he’s been outstanding this season. It sometimes seems like a quite a few young and talented pitchers overcome injuries early in their career and then really take off around the age of 30 or so. Case in study would be Chris Carpenter.
Tonight’s starter is Fernando Cruz, a 32 year old righty who was signed by Cincy this year. He’s had a solid year at AAA, and has good stats so far in the big leagues. The peripherals aren’t as nice.
In other words, tonight this Fernando Cruz will be another vintage Fernando Valenzuela circa 1981.
We are screwed again. I keep telling you posters our only hope for the division title lies in the hands of the Yankees and Mets. If they can beat the Brewers four of six then we might – MIGHT – be able to hang on.
