Gallegos dominant that inning. Nice to see.

Why take out a gold glove in the 8th inning when you’ve already got the lead?

Farmer had no idea against Helsley.

It’s a winner! Close but a good game after the 6th inning or so.Great to see Goldy and Nado hitting again. Helsley fired up to close it out. Still prefer to play with a lead but we hung in there for the win. Get a cigar tonight!
    Go Cardinals!

I don’t see how you put flaherty on the post season roster at this point. Though in reality, all of our pitchers have struggled a bit lately. I just feel flaherty isn’t going to be ready and asking him to come out of bullpen is just asking for trouble. You only have so many spots on your post season roster. Plus all of our guys have been throwing lots of pitches and not going deep. Better have relievers that have been there and produced.

Donaldson just hit the foul pole to tie the game 6-6 against the Brewers in the 9th.

So true. I know it’s obvious, but really need this for a realistic run in October/November.

Well brewers get a walk off single to win the game. Yankees closer forgot he could pitch 100 mph, got burnt throwing slider after slider. Sliders are only good if you mix fastballs for strikes into the fold. Oh well.

Very true. Holmes only got three of 10 fastballs over the plate. Pretty bad when you have to feed the .156 hitter your slider for strikes.

Does anyone still think Flaherty is our ace of the future?

I’m genuinely curious…what is the trouble that will occur if Flaherty is coming out of the pen? Reinjury? Ineffectiveness?

I feel like I want the guys who’ve performed in the postseason on the roster. Flaherty has done so.

Looking at the current roster, we can if course expect Waino, Monty, Quintana and Mikolas as starters. In the pen, Helsley, Gallegos, Pallante, Hicks and Woodford should probably be locked into bullpen roles. That leaves four spots among:

    Flaherty
    Hudson
    Matz
    Stratton
    Thompson
    Romero
    Naughton

I think Matz gets a slot for sure as a lefty. Stratton probably gets one too for middle innings. I’d say that Thompson has earned a long man role too. Apart from that, you’ve got Jack, Dak, JoJo and Packy for the last spot. That would be my order of preference for the final spot.

Well it depends on how many spots they want filled up by pitchers. Relieving is a different animal than starting. You have to be able to get ready in less warm up pitches. It could lead to more injury time which would be a big setback. Yea there is an upside to having flaherty there, I don’t disagree. If they had been using him out of the bullpen instead of starting, would be great. But overall, I think it’s just not worth it but that’s my opinion and maybe I’m wrong.

Taking this season in a vacuum, why would Flaherty be on the post-season roster? Will only need 3 starters, maybe 4 but I don’t think so. So, that puts him in long relief.

I don’t see a spot for him but he will probably get one.

Before the end of regular season there are plenty of innings to be pitched, including a couple more starts for Flaherty. Things could look different by the end.

This is Carlson’s chance to become relevant for post season, he better take advantage.

So reputation gets a roster spot?

That’s exactly what Matheny thought when Travis Ishikawa blew up Wacha.

I feel like I laid out my case solidly. Who would you take ahead of Flaherty for October? Hudson, Romero or JoJo? Cause those are pretty much the choices. And it might be 2 of those 4 now with Hicks on the IL.

Who’s got the hot hand will likely be a huge factor for pitchers on the post-season roster bubble. I’d written Hudson off, but what if he has a couple more outings similar to today and Flaherty continues as is?

And I guess Matz gets a look too. Ironically, he was having a very good outing in his comeback game when he got injured on that goofball fielding attempt.

Some tough decisions for Oli and Mo, but it will probably get a little clearer by the end of the month.

If they carry 13, this morning I had…..

    SP1 Wainwright (1), SP2 Monty (2), SP3 Mikolas (3)

    Long relief: Q (4), Thompson (5), Woodford (6)

When ahead: Helsley (7), Gio (8), Hicks (9) Pallante (10)

    Romero (11), Stratton (12), undecided (13)

The final spot I still wanted to see Matz, Hudson and Flaherty’s effectiveness. Right this moment I’d go with Hudson because he just showed effectiveness in todays game. He got results we are hoping Flaherty could get.

Hicks to the IL is new news since this discussion started. I’d pick the most effective between Hicks, Matz and Flaherty by seasons end.

Not to worry 25, I expect you will see Flaherty active for the postseason.

Of course it’s fluid, but if both Matz and Hicks are effective by seasons end, Romero’s spot is shaky.

Romero could get bumped. He started lights out but has stumbled recently. He is also coming back from injury like Matz, Flaherty and now Hicks.
