What is Edman’s arm supposed to be like? I watched several throws from him last night that concerned me.
Fast Eddie’s arm does rekindle memories of Eck at times, but I think there’s little doubt that Eddie’s is stronger, Forschster.
And how about this bullpen. What a change from two months ago. The dead weight has completely been eliminated…..not referring to Cabby here, as he’ll come back better than ever in ’23. You gaze out there in the pen and you can’t find one slouch amongst them. Generally a team will have just 3 or 4 dependable bullpen arms, but our Redbirds have ??….. let’s count them shall we?
1. Helsley
2. Gio
3. Neil Pallante
4. JoJo Romero
5. Stratton
6. Woodford
7. Hudson(a good possibility)This is an elite bullpen.
September 4, 2022 at 9:51 am #198986Eddie’s arm is excellent. People who are constantly looking to criticize him should just stop. There are things to criticize but he is not one of them.
September 4, 2022 at 10:01 am #198987I happened to notice on one DP attempt that Eddie was a little slow on the exchange that led to the play being scored a FC, but there’s nothing wrong with his arm. He’s played jillions of innings at SS in both his amatuer and minor league career and Marmol’s also used him in RF, which tells me there’s not a question about his arm strength. Is he a Dunston or Furcal? No, but he’s plenty capable of getting plenty enough on the throw to 1B from the left side of the IF to get the out.
September 4, 2022 at 10:05 am #198988GameCard…Haha! Eddie’s off-limits to crticism…Not only is his arm plenty strong enough, but he’s also getting tater happy and may challenge the big kids for HR leader! Haha!

jj-cf-stlParticipantIn Hicks last 7 IP he has 1 BB and 12 K. Who knows what’s next with him, but if this is him taking a step forward in his development… Well, he has wipe out stuff but has always lacked command of it.
September 4, 2022 at 10:19 am #198991With GameCard’s blood pressure taking a dramatic upward surge in mind, can we all please refrain from any criticism of Fast Eddie. But honestly, if you really examine Edman’s play from top to bottom, there’s nothing to criticize. There are 9 untouchable(Arenado, Goldy, Edman, Nooty, Donovan, Montgomery, Waino, Helsley and Neil Pallante) Cardinals on this team right now……..and Tommy sits right up there near the top.
September 4, 2022 at 10:36 am #198995Pugs…Haha! As a fan I reserve my right to criticize any player at any given moment. For instance, anytime Nado fails to complete a spectacular play and get the out, he immediately regresses from possibly being the greatest 3B’man of all-time to being nothing more than, Nolan “Brickhands” Arenado…
September 4, 2022 at 10:37 am #198996Pug…that was my point.
September 4, 2022 at 10:43 am #198997Pugs…Nice comment on the BP! I was actually checking out the pitching stats for the Redbirds late last night and noticed all of the skinny ERA’s that are featured by the BP guys. What’s really nice, is that they’re being displayed by both the short and long relief pitchers. Looking really good.
September 4, 2022 at 11:05 am #198998From my standpoint, a glance at the flip side of a trading card or the career numbers posted on a web-site such as baseball reference will normally provide a pretty good illustration of both an excellent or great ballplayer. In fact, that’s the case with most ballplayers, but not Tommy Edman. He’s certainly not alone, but to me, he falls under the category of a guy that you simply have to watch closely over the course of a couple of seasons to realize the full impact and subtle contributions that he provides to a winning ballclub. And I’ll also add that although I have absolutely nothing tangible to base this on, he strikes me as a winner.
September 4, 2022 at 11:13 am #198999I couldn’t follow the game last evening. Can one of you worthies tell why DeLuzio exited early, thanks.
September 4, 2022 at 11:47 am #199007I couldn’t follow the game last evening. Can one of you worthies tell why DeLuzio exited early, thanks.
Nootbaar replaced DeLuzio because Estrada replaced Smyly.
September 4, 2022 at 12:00 pm #199012Thanks, ED.
September 4, 2022 at 12:00 pm #199013But honestly, if you really examine Edman’s play from top to bottom, there’s nothing to criticize.
If you watched the entire game, the only throw that you could be concerned about was the first one where they probably weren’t going to get the DP anyway. That ball had low velocity traveling to Goldy. It was not like any other throw the rest of the game, therefore, that told me he probably didn’t have a good grip on the ball when he made the throw, and his arm is just fine and not injured. All other throws looked dandy. Now if you only saw the 1st throw, you might be wondering.
Edman only turned 4 DPs during the game. He’ll do in a pinch when Marmol needs him to fill in at 2B and SS for the non-utility players. 😉
September 4, 2022 at 12:18 pm #199018Euro, I actually watched almost the whole game and there were at least 2 by Edman. The third throw MAY have been DeJong. I noticed it at the time of the plays and it stuck in my mind. That may be due to the deity status many try to put on his shoulders but I did notice the throws.
September 4, 2022 at 12:25 pm #199022Pugs you touched on something briefly I have been thinking. Edman does remind me of Eckersly except I hope we have him alot longer. Seems to me he keeps getting better and better.
September 4, 2022 at 12:28 pm #199023Eckersly or Eckstein?
September 4, 2022 at 12:31 pm #199024Indeed, Wooster. Even though Fast Eddie’s arm is stronger than Eck’s, there’s something about the way he throws the ball from the SS position that makes me a bit nervous as to whether there’s enough mustard on his throw to get the runner……just as it was when Eck was our SS. But I don’t think the problem lies with Eddie, but rather my unjustified paranoia. I would love to see side by side footage of Eddie and Eck throwing the ball to 1st base from the SS position. It could be revealing. Maybe there’s a similar slight hitch or hiccup in the way they throw….. especially in hurried situations.

Sounds like you’re being picky here and picking at a scab, i.e., critiquing a Cardinal player because you don’t like some posters who praise him too highly in your opinion. You just admitted one of the throws MAY have been DeJong. Might want to look in the mirror.
Tell you what, cite the other two throws by Edman, or even by DeJong, and I’ll post vids of them here so we can view together and see what you’re talking about.
September 4, 2022 at 1:05 pm #1990312 were on possible double plays. I’ll have to re-watch the game to give you the third. The first one was in the first inning, I believe.
As far as being picky, anymore, whenever someone questions anything with Edman, they are almost labeled a hater. Sorry if I am stepping on toes but I thought the throws were weak and that’s why I asked about his arm. I don’t question his effort or his speed or even if he is a good defender. But I also know he has weaknesses just like every other player that has ever played the game.
September 4, 2022 at 1:17 pm #199032Not the 1st inning throw, forsch. I already described that one as low velocity. I want the OTHER two throws you saw. Either both by Edman or 1 each for Edman and DeJong.
And I think your distaste for the Edman admiration by a few posters was a counter to some who said Edman was not a starter, just a Bo Hart, not an outfielder, not a short stop, not a hitter, just a utility fill in guy, etc. Who started it? I don’t know, but it seems kind of weird to want to pull Edman down, which is what you’re doing in my opinion if you’re critiquing Edman for multiple bad throws last night. There has to be some underpinning to it other than Edman. That’s why I wanted to see the 2 OTHER throws you are being persistent about.
September 4, 2022 at 1:27 pm #199034Forsch31…I don’t think you’re being picky. A couple of weeks ago Eddie wasn’t getting the job done with the bat and I had to acknowledge that. Like you mentioned, almost all ballplayers have weaknesses and even the great ones scuffle through slumps. In any event, like you, I think it’s silly when some folks label a fan as a “hater” when any criticism whatsoever is mentioned about a particular player. Edman’s one of my favorite Cardinals and I want him to be successful, which is the primary reason I would offer up any crticism of his performance when he’s scuffling.
September 4, 2022 at 1:35 pm #199035Euro, I will have to re-watch the game. I saw the plays at the time, didn’t write down when they were or anything. I watch the games for enjoyment not to notate everything that happens. If I was REALLY trying to bring Edman down, I would be able to tell EXACTLY when the plays were. After all, it would be a lot easier to point out weaknesses if I could identify exactly when they happened.
September 4, 2022 at 1:38 pm #199038Where was forsch labeled a hater? That was his word. He was merely countered by a couple posters when he said Edman’s arm was a concern and made multiple bad throws last night. I saw all that and it seemed like a bad take given Edman had a very good night at the plate and turned 4 DPs on defense. So I asked him to identify the throws that concerned him.
September 4, 2022 at 1:41 pm #199039Okay forsch. I get it.
