Shoot, was hoping we’d get this puppy in. I doubt this game gets rescheduled unless Milwaukee makes a mad September push…..which is not going to happen.
First inning – Nico Hoerner batting. Throw from second was slow. 2 additional runs scored.
Second inning – Nick Madrigal batting. Throw from second was much better but the Cardinals had no chance to get the DP.
Fourth inning – Nick Madrigal batting. Throw from second was slow but they still turned the DP.
Fifth inning – Nico Hoerner batting. Throw from second was better but it looks slow because the first throw was from Arenado. They turn the DP.That’s all I have time for right now. I do know that one of the plays I’m thinking of was DeJong’s play that he didn’t charge enough and couldn’t throw out the runner. I think that was the second inning.
Okay, thanks forsch. I don’t see anything that’s questionable in regard to Edman in your write-up except the 1st inning which, was definitely slow coming out. Like I said, it was unlike all the others so I believe he just didn’t have the best grip on it.
Anyway, I think you’re a good poster and a very loyal Cardinal fan. We’ve had several good exchanges in the past, it’s just in this one case we obviously disagreed somewhat.
And the Cards swept today, it’s all good.

My original question was a legitimate questioning of his arm. I did not remember his arm being weak but when I saw some throws that looked slow, I was asking for a realistic assessment of his arm. I wasn’t able to dig into the scouting reports or prospect reports at that time. I have since been able to look at the 2019 MLB.com prospect report where it was rated a 50. That seems consistent with my eyes. This is what was said: “He has outstanding instincts defensively that allow his solid range and average arm to play up, giving him the chance to stay at shortstop long-term.”
I like Edman and think he is valuable to the Cardinals. However, I think he is performing somewhat close to his upside. I also think that MLB.com write up says it best when it says that his “whole is greater than the sum of his parts”. He is someone who starts until you develop someone better. There are a lot of players who can be better. I think Gorman could be better. I think Winn could be better. That starts to take starting positions away from Edman. He is not taking Arenado’s job or Goldschmidt’s job. I am also not just giving Gorman and Winn the starting spots forever. I would give Edman SS until Winn is ready. I hope that Gorman earns 2B by that time.
GameCard…Did you see our boy Eddie when he gave Albert the high fives to congratulate him at HP after the great Pujols pushed him across with the 2 run tater? Eddie had that Betty Crocker sliding mitt on his hand, but I was still afraid that the big strong Pujols was going to fracture little Eddie’s wrist…HaHa! Glad he was wearing that mitt!
Not surprised that you would pipe in with that comment, GameCard. The fact of the matter is that they will get every opportunity to be the starting 2bman and starting SS. They have higher ceilings than Edman. Whether they obtain it or not may still be in question but it’s still the facts.
forsch, Edman certainly doesn’t have a cannon like Arenado. If all I saw was the 1st inning throw, I might wonder why he put so little on it, e.g., injury, bad grip, etc. The rest of the game told me that one throw wasn’t like the others, so no worries about an injury.
I agree with the scouting report, a howitzer arm isn’t what makes Edman, but his arm works very well with his combination of skills. Anticipation, foot quickness and speed, plus quick and accurate throws are what makes him a gold glove defender.
Almost everyone’s opinion. I think if every poster on here gave his true feeling on who has the higher ceiling. Gorman (75%) and Winn (95%) would be the winners. Edman is a good defender but Winn could be far better. He will have better range and a far better arm. Gorman will almost certainly not achieve Edman’s defensive ability but he could far surpass Edman offensively.
I don’t mean to change the subject, but Pujols has now collected 16 taters in 232 AB’s. To put that in perspective, Goldy’s collected 34 HR’s in 478 AB’s.
I’m not entirely certain what a higher ceiling is, but I don’t think there’s any question as to whether Gorman has the potential to be a guy that can tater-up 30 times and push across 80 to 100 runs across HP during a season if he can find a way to trim down the number of K’s in order to get enough PA’s to reach those aforementioned plateaus. Eddie will never be the sort of player that can fill that type of role. As for the guy named Winn, I’ve never seen him play.
I don’t think Winn will be far better defensively than Edman…that’s such a high bar unless he’s Ozzie level. Yet I do think Winn has a very high ceiling with the glove, and could be even better than Edman. I think the potential with the bat stands out more so…I like his chances to be above average hitting and a high level defender. Still, having both guys is not a bad problem to have.
Concerning Gorman, his glove isn’t his calling card. I think he’s going to turn some heads in his second year though.
