Now imagine CMart, PDL and Oviedo as the SP3-SP5 until KK returns. That devalues the pen more than taking Gant out of it. You’ve got to have leads to protect.

I don’t disagree with that. I think our rotation is potentially in shambles but instead of weakening the pen to shore up the rotation how about shoring up the rotation by an outside acquisition?

No-one wants to undo the Arenado trade but Gombers absence of depth is why this is a talking point.

There are more bodies in the bullpen than slots available.

I think it is Sosa and Williams.

Blingboy, my comment wasn’t anything about bader in particular other than even if he isn’t hitting,at least he gives you real good defense as opposed to carpenter which was what my comment was about, doesn’t give either. Like I said I could have put arenado or goldy in there that would give the same thought. My point in my counterpoint is baders name or stats don’t need to be brought up in every comment. There’s doesn’t need to be a counterpoint to anything. I don’t think anyone thinks bader is going to bloom into a great hitter. Can he hit well enough to justify his playing, I believe so but time will tell. If he doesn’t hit, others will get their chances. If you or anyone else want to keep on piling on the hatred, just make your own bader thread and relish in your enjoyment of kicking someone when they are down.

willie – people learn when they don’t think they have all the answers. There’s an old saying that a person who thinks they’re the dumbest person in the room will turn out to be the smartest person in the room. Baderade should read that old saying and learn from it.

Bccran, most people who think they are the dumbest are the dumbest. Bader is either going to make it or he isn’t. He will either get traded or released if he doesn’t pick it up. Nothing that you have ever said, will make him a better hitter, would probably make him worse. He got this far which I can make a bet, is further than you got at anything. Personally getting traded or released might help him out, nowadays guys tend to get better when they leave the Cardinals.

I read an interesting article about why nogowski should make the team. It’s hard to argue with. Having a contact hitter that can spot start and hit effectively coming off the bench as well as a guy that will take a walk wouldn’t be bad. He may not look the part of a ballplayer but that doesn’t really mean anything.

Actually, willie, I have gotten further on several fronts. Let’s just leave it at that and not take personal shots. Okay?

If Brian is right and we start the season with 14 pitchers there is no possible way to fit Nogowski in the 12 position players. When and if it goes to 13 and 13 it would theoretically be possible. Depending on how pathetic our bench turns out to be, hitting wise, it seems plausible he could be in STL at some point.

Which raises the issue of whether he could quickly become functional in left field if he needed to stay in for a couple innings after pinch hitting. Hopefully he at least has enough arm for that. Meaning no disrespect to the late Mr. Duncan, but he illustrates that with enough effort modest defensive ability can work well enough out there sometimes. With double switches and shifting guys around it would be workable if we need that bat on the bench.

What happens to a players option, who been optioned out, if after another injury occurs next week, the Cardinals decide to keep them on the 26 man roster?

If normal rules apply this season, and if they haven’t changed, a player has to be in the minors 20 days before an option year is burned. 20 days cumulative all year. Someone will correct me if I am wrong, which wouldn’t surprise me.

You are correct no one wants to undo the Arenado trade. However, it isn’t Gomber’s absence as to why this is a talking point. They made that trade, then traded Fowler, and then in classic Cardinals offseason MO they stopped and did nothing else. Everyone knew they most likely stopped short again on the outfield and the starting pitching. It was discussed at the time. We will find out shortly if it bites them or not when the real games start.

After March 16, injured players cannot be optioned out. They would have to go on the MLB IL, receiving MLB salary, benefits and service time. This is per the CBA.

    Shildt Monday morning news:

KK is throwing a sim game at 11 am today, up and down twice. Next step if recovery is good is a stadium appearance sooner rather than later.

Jack is scheduled to pitch into the 6th today. Has gotten better as camp has gone on. Hitting plate with slider, fastball command good, more consistency.

Other pitchers today are Webb and Gio (with a couple more in reserve – Miller, Thompson).

No special push or talk with players competing for jobs in final week. 14/12 vs. 13/13 pitchers/hitters will impact people. Constant evaluation, daily competition. Once season starts, wants them to compete together for the good of the team.

Not one guy in OF who hasn’t performed this spring in various shapes and measures. Dylan mainly, but also Tyler perhaps will see some time in CF this week (not planned today).

Our discussion had been in-house SP depth, or the lack of due to trades, and who is now better suited in SP vs reliever roles. I don’t see how whining about the budget adds to the discussion.

I wasn’t whining. Sorry if I missed part of the discussion. I do agree they have some options but still believe they missed an opportunity to add depth from outside the organization. this is typically their approach and their internal option have proven over the last several years to not be enough.

There is depth then there is quality depth. Those two aren’t always the same thing. I am not convinced we have enough proven, quality pitching depth at this time.

Any chance Nogowski and Sosa make the team, and they cut Carpenter? One hard hit ball by Carp today, but AGAIN he hit into the shift.

They may just have to cut the cord with Carp. I’m not concerned about the starting pitching as long as they score enough runs. Which remains to be seen. Right now they’re 21st in runs scored and 24th in OPS. 29th in HRs.

    Shildt Monday postgame:

Gio had really good stuff, couple close misses (walks), tried to do too much. Guy put good swing on. Stuff is good, just needs more consistency.

Flaherty had a fantastic outing. Vintage Jack. Conviction. 5th not very clean inning. Wanted mentally to get out there for 6th. Today was day to be stretched out. Next time out will be four innings/60-65 pitches.

Webb has been very positive. Under the radar around he game. Likes pace, strikes, effective vs. LHB, RHB.

Watched Kim’s 2-inning sim game. Was good, looked sharp. Could be a game if he recovers well.

Waino will pitch Tuesday, also Game 2 on road in Cincy and hope opener in St. Louis.

Not overly concerned about Carpenter. Has good attitude but not where he wants to be.

Bader’s forearm may have hurt his timing at the plate earlier perhaps, but has no impact on him in the present.

OF play this week. Best chance is Dylan in center. No need to put O’Neill in RF. Williams and Thomas could use corner work. Edman will also get OF work to be ready for double switches. Cause and effect if 12 hitters, but need flexibility anyway. Love his versatility – always have – but don’t misread – he will get his action at second base. Rondon and Moroff can play OF, but not likely to see them there in games. Need to play others.

Made first double switch today. Felt good to play NL rules today, which we love.

    GS,
6 SP’rs have made starts this ST. Flaherty, Wainwright, KK, Martinez, Gant and PDL. KK has 2 GS and 3.0 IP, and is not really stretched out to start, so we should expect the other 5 above to start.

“I am not convinced we have enough proven, quality pitching depth at this time.”

Who do you want acquired, to replace whom? Major league depth, minors depth? What acquisition improves the club?
