So Shildt was brilliant to include Sosa in tonight’s lineup. Good on ya, Skipper.

Well shildt will be even more brilliant if Dejong sits tomorrow and sosa starts in his place. Carlson is really struggling as well though. I like for the most part what I’m seeing in 6 of the 8 regular guys. I’m hoping Carlson can come out of it maybe needs a break. Normal bash on guy bader has really been solid. He’s taking good at bats, getting his shots. Can he continue we will see, but I like his approaches. Dejong I’m sorry needs to sit more though it just seems shildt won’t do it.

Sosa with a nice play that might just stop a big late game rally.

Good Gant starts the 8th by retiring Tromp. Bad Gant walks Vosler with one out. Good Sosa saves Gants bacon for now by laying out to snag Ruf’s grounder and throws him out, Vosler moves to 2B with two outs. Cabrera replaces Gant. Four more outs to go.

I really like the young yaz. He’s the kind of player the Cardinals should be looking for. Just seems fundamentally sound.

Yaz rips Cabrera for an RBI single, scoring Vosler (Gant’s free pass). Still need 4 outs and lead cut to 6-4.

willie, most of the changes in the last 2 years I don’t like. I think the safety base at first is overdue. It’s only purpose is to stop collisions at first base when the runner is going full out trying to be safe.

Unbelievable crap defense by the Cardinals. Bader please wake up. Somebody please remind him he’s the centerfielder tonight.

It looks like the place to hit the ball is in the bermuda triangle around SS, 2b and CF. The 3 of them can’t get the catch figured out. Bader should be taking charge on that.

What the hell, bader has to call for that ball. Sosa looked like he called for it and was going for it but then decided not. I think someone has talked to bader about not being aggressive. If the center fielder can catch it, he calls it and everyone vamooses. Sosa was trying to get it and should have caught it, looked like he was scared of getting hit. Sorry outfielders can’t be scared. I’ve been involved in collisions and it sucks but you have to catch the ball.

That’s three times I’ve seen tonight and I haven’t watched the entire game. Once was on the RF side. It must be Laurel and Hardy night at the park. Fortunately, Cabrera strikes out Estrada to head to the 9th with a one-run lead.

Cards go quietly in the top half of the 9th. Have to slam the door in the bottom half. I guess Cabrera stays in.

Walks just kill you every time. Got to make a team put hits together.

Cabrera wild now. Pitches not even close as he walks Solano on 4 pitches after giving up a hit to Crawford on a 1-2 pitch.

That really should have been a double play. I know sosa has had a good night but it was hit perfectly for that.

Carlson saves the day with a nice catch against the wall to preserve the win.

Good play by Carlson. It wasn’t as great as the announcers were carrying on about but under circumstances it was nice. I understand the emotions.

I was getting ready to question Schildt’s pitching change, but Mille came thru with 2 big outs. Maybe for once we can have someone pitch above expectations.

LOL at the Giants announcer on the 2nd out of the 9th — “He hits a pop up. Now these haven’t been routine…..”

Well I’m not sure miller is really the answer in 9th but Cabrera was probably done so had to be someone. At least the other Miller had already been used.

I normally wouldn’t be watching this this late but on vacation so don’t have to get up early. Would also normally skip post game but interested in what is said about those missed pop ups.

True, because Carlson mis-read it a bit. He drifted back to the track, but then had to hightail it the last couple steps to the wall to make the catch.

In fairness to the “poor” defense on pops an flies tonight, the wind was a factor. Too many mis-reads for that not to be true, plus the Giants didn’t seem to have the same problems — maybe because they know the park better. I also remember the nice diving catch Edman made in RF was only necessary because he didn’t read it very well and got a late break.

Well the wind in San Fran has always been trouble particularly in candlestick. And I agree on the edman one. But the two in short center, I feel watching bader, that he had a bead on those and would have caught them easily. Now had those guys called for it,I couldn’t tell. But I think him coming in, he has the easiest play as you will. So I feel he has to call those guys off and they have to give way. I mentioned in another post, maybe someone has talked to him about not being as aggressive cause usually he goes after everything. I say that because in Colorado there was a play between him and Carlson in right where bader was coming hard from center and him and Carlson who I felt called it a little late when it should have been his ball all the way. At the last moment, Carlson gave way but it was close and bader just barely caught the ball cause he had to veer off a little to avoid collision and it looked like Carlson wasn’t happy about it. I personally felt he helped cause it plus center fielder should get everything he can, just has to be smart. Maybe they talked to him about being less aggressive and here is the result of that. I don’t know. I just know all he needed was one more step on each play and he would have been in position to catch those balls tonight but maybe cause of wind he wasn’t confident but his eyes told a different story.
