I agree with your intent Brian but it still would be a subjective decision that could be manipulated by someone. The entire rule should be scrapped.

That is what the article says…
Why not just walk the guy after Didi? throw up the 4 fingers Shildty? He could have gotten him out right there and then.
But he didn’t want to LOSE the game by loading the bases with no outs.
The game and rules didn’t fail anyone, placing winning over potentially hurting someone did. Winning stopped Shildt from getting him out. Period.
And to be honest, Webb I think would have gotten out of the inning anyways the way he was locked in for that inning. even if not, he wouldn’t have done worse.
jager, good question. Does an intentional walk count as a batter faced? I had not considered this.
bb, why not check out Cabrera’s history of hit batters to make a more informed recommendation. Maybe one bad day at the office does not warrant a demotion.
Good point Jager. An IBB is a PA in the record books, should be in a game too, as far as the rule is concerned.

Yes, an intentional walk does count as a batter faced. LaRussa did it in the season’s opening series in Anaheim and the announcers were talking about it.
