We are playing a 1-5 team in our park. Should be feasting. As to Carlson, he is doing what one might expect a AA player to do thrown into the big league. I am sorry to say I expect we will see something like that from Oviedo despite his nice outing. Another AA guy thrown in the shark tank.
Goldschmidt down to .238, he must have grabbed one of the pool noodles out of the bat rack by mistake.
We have to remember that Goldy will turn 34 this year. I love the guy, but there’s a good chance that he’s declining and at least some shot that he’s a legit .238 hitter going forward. We certainly hope that’s not the case, but it happens to many great players at that age.

I disagree. He got a slider in the middle of the zone…you’re not going to get a better pitch to drive than that one. He simply missed it.
I really think I owe John Mabry an apology. Damn this team struggles at the plate and has for years.

Stlcard, I didn’t consider that a slider down the middle. I think he thought it was. It has some late tailing down action hence why his bat swing changed last second and he popped it up. I prefer a guy like nogowski who isn’t a power guy to work counts and get an actual pitch down the middle or work the walk for the top of the order but that’s just me. If it’s a power hitter, maybe different thought.
At the risk of coming across as a Homer, hang in there gang. This team is going pitch, hit, run, field and execute. Every team encounters a few slumps in a season and just by happenstance, our boys are mired in one to start the ’21 campaign. Moves will be made to tweak things in our favor, with youngsters arriving on the scene to impress. And don’t worry a bit about Carlson. Remember his early struggles last year? I think he’s simply going to prove to be a slow starter out of the gate. Same for Goldy. Traditionally a slow starter. I seriously doubt that Father Time is ready to turn him into a .238 hitter just yet. Little has changed since 12 days ago. This team will win this division.

Bader – outWell this team will struggle if our top 2 offensive weapons struggle. This is fact! It will be ugly.
This team reminds me of 2009. They may hold the lead in the central but they need to add some guys to get them over the hump. We added Derosa but we needed another bat to get over the hump.
I think a starter may be a need but we won’t know that for a few weeks. The brass seems to think were ok. Lefthanded pitcher for the pen might be in the works too.
The sample size may be small, but there are a few things that are sticking out to me.
1. Offense needs help. They need more production from the outfield and need it quickly. You cannot rely on the “big two” to carry you everyday. Edman is fine at the lead off spot. Not sure they really have anyone who can consistently hit in front of, or behind the “big two”.
2. Starting Rotation is incomplete. Missing Kim and Mikolas really hurts. They need to one of them back quickly and they need to find a sixth starter fast. Gant is a great reliever, not sure starting is his gig. Ponce is a great story, but not a ML starting pitcher.
3. Bullpen depth an issue. Throwing too many innings already … pace is not sustainable.
Free Edmundo Sosa
Sosa falls into the same category as Bader, O’Neill and Williams. The organization keeps hoping that another year of experience will overcome not quite enough talent.
If your system has not produced prospects that have moved up rather crisply and shown an ability to dominate at AAA, then you either have to go get some talent from outside or hope guys like Carlson and Oviedo can shake off the giant leap in the skill level of the opposition that comes with skipping the AAA step, which is a roll of the dice.
It does not help when you do have a guy who moves up crisply and does show dominance at AAA and you trade him because he is blocked by a money guy flopping around on the MLB roster.

It looked middle-middle to me on the telecast. Looking again on Gameday, it was very slightly inside and very slightly down, but still on the edge of the middle middle chunk of the zone. I get that he’d have been better off to wait on a pitch, in hindsight. That was still a pretty good pitch to hit, and one that he probably would have swung at again if he had the chance.
This team would be terrific if we just had better hitting, pitching and bull pen and switched from Gatorade to Nehi grape.
Ha! Sweet “Nehi grape” reference yet once again, Cardinal In France. We may have to bestow you with the nickname “Radar”. Also, it can’t just be me, but with how lousy our Birds have been playing, the highlights of our Game threads has been checking out what Cardinal In France is having for Din-Din that night. No mystery to what RatsBuddy is having nightly…..hotdog pieces smothered in barbecue sauce, fried potatoes, Amish restaurant banana or cherry pie, ice cream sandwich, Sunkist orange and a healthy dose of Barnaby Jones episodes.
BB – with Delong continuing on a long downward slide, why not give Sosa a chance for a few games? Couldn’t hurt.
