Im not sure what to make of keeping Wieters. He brings nothing to the table that Knizner doesn’t already have.

ParticipantMy apologies, BW. But Supreme_Leader has a point about the lifter with sort arms who can’t hit the outside pitch. And you know how I feel about the other guy who IMO has a slightly inflated cutesy view of himself.

MLB proven depth. Catchers get injured. Frankly, while Molina is healthy, you or I could be the back up!
September 5, 2020 at 8:53 am #138679bccran, you have made repetitive posts making fun of players’ appearances. No one else controls your keyboard but you.
September 5, 2020 at 8:58 am #138681bccran
ParticipantYou’re right. In this world appearances still mean something. You have a Big Blue background. Appearances sure meant something there.
September 5, 2020 at 9:00 am #138682You made a point of talking about how you conduct yourself in your business dealings. When someone is struggling in their job performance, do you make fun of their appearance publicly? That is inappropriate – there and here. No need to dig a further hole and feel you have to get the last word in; let’s move on…

ParticipantI’m happy to move on. But I haven’t made a habit of criticizing “multiple players” appearance. Mainly just one, which included a lot of nervous gestures. And his puffy statement in the off season. Comments about a lifter with short arms is factual and shouldn’t be construed as derogatory. It’s about hitting that fastball on the outside corner. He simply can’t get out there.
September 5, 2020 at 9:19 am #138685Brian, Wieters may have been proven depth in the past but the last two seasons Kniznwr has putplayed him every chance he has gotten. He cant hit, has trouble keeping runners in check and his defense is awful.
September 5, 2020 at 9:45 am #138689BHC, I get that, but are we talking about re-signing Wieters for 2021 or the roster today? Do you want the Cardinals to release Wieters right now so Knizner can do the same thing he is doing now – not play? Then what if they have a catching injury – or two? It has happened. That is how Travis Tartamella among others briefly reached the majors. Jose Godoy is next in line and it would not be good if it got to that.

ParticipantAt the risk of “digging myself a deeper hole” (although opinions are generally allowed), I think our benched CF is caught up in appearances. It’s one of his problems. I remember when Mike Trout was asked about Randal Grichuk, after Grichuk was gone from the Angels. He said that Randal was okay, but he could never pass up a mirror. If one is too tied up and conscious of themselves, they risk not reaching their full potential. They have a hard time taking instruction well, and sometimes stubbornly think they know better than their teacher, coach, boss, etc. It’s why Jason Marquis wasn’t retained by the Cards. Read his comments that winter throwing Tony under the bus.
Maybe the humble pie HB is eating now will help him turn the corner. Sure hope so.
Will not comment again on this, as requested.
September 5, 2020 at 10:20 am #138692I would rather have a player who is confident in his abilities than someone who isn’t.
September 5, 2020 at 10:34 am #138694I don’t think the statements Bader made were saying he had already earned the position. I believe he was stating that he would do everything he could to earn the position and keep it. If he hit like he did in the minors, he would definitely be the starter.
September 5, 2020 at 10:37 am #138695I missed the game last night. I was shocked when I looked at the box score to see that Jack couldn’t even make it through 3 innings. His pitch count was 69 and I figured he was good for 100 pitches after being built up over the last few starts. Are the Cardinals just being very cautious with him with any eye towards next year?
September 5, 2020 at 10:39 am #138696I wasn’t surprised to see that Carp got a homer. He owns Wrigley Field. He should start all five of these games then go to the bench when we leave town.
With the way he hits at Wrigley maybe the Cubs would do a Carp for Bryant trade? :o)
September 5, 2020 at 10:45 am #138697Gscott, it took Flaherty over 40 pitches to get through the first inning. With a high stress inning on his arm like that, I had no problem with him coming out when he did. If he didn’t throw so many pitches in the first inning, I think they would have let him throw closer to 100 pitches.

ParticipantBader’s off season comment about being the starting CFer for the Cardinals was defiant. He knew 2019 wasn’t good offensively, but didn’t recognize how awful it was. That’s a problem IMO.
September 5, 2020 at 12:16 pm #138703So now you can tell intent?
September 5, 2020 at 12:23 pm #138704Im not sure what to make of keeping Wieters. He brings nothing to the table that Knizner doesn’t already have.
Wieters has no business being on this roster. It is just a waste of $2M frankly. Knizer should be the backup and some dime a dozen AAAA catcher could be the third guy on standby.
Unfortunately Knizer is on the Carson Kelly career path. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Knizer shipped out this winter.

ParticipantHerrera is coming on strong, gscottar.
Only 2 years away.September 5, 2020 at 12:44 pm #138706Bccran, the funny thing is that Bader is quoted as saying he knows how bad his 2019 was.
September 5, 2020 at 2:01 pm #138711Herrera is coming on strong, gscottar.
Only 2 years away.I am aware. Knizer and Herrera would make a good combination until Herrera fully proves himself at this level. I am just ready for this team to get younger. We have too many old guys.
September 5, 2020 at 2:10 pm #138712bccran
ParticipantApparently Herrera has some native Molina traits defensively. Very advanced for his age. They really like him.
September 5, 2020 at 3:30 pm #138716Sadly a .500 team. No offense and no moves as usual to help.
September 5, 2020 at 5:50 pm #138778bccran
ParticipantMiller was a good move, Larry. So was Kim on the rotation side.

I’m actually not sure Godoy would be worse than Wieters negative WAR and negative DRS. And if there are two catching injuries Godoy would probably be brought anyways. When Yadi was out sick Wieters got more than his share of starts and it was laughable how Knizner couldn’t start both games of a double header when he’s in his early to mid 20s but its okay for Yadi. Knizner has gotten the short end of the stick for two years now and he’s proven himself in my opinion to be a better option than Wieters.
