Just to clarify, my above post about Knizner doesn’t mean he wasn’t well-liked by scouts/coaches. In fact, he has chance to grow into a everyday catcher at the highest level someday and will definitely be in my Top 20. Mercado and Adolis were brought up the most in conversations for POY.
October 12, 2017 at 5:17 am #35865Does anyone know why Nogowski was picked? As a first baseman at Florida State and so far in the minors he hasn’t shown much power for a corner infielder/corner outfielder type. As a professional he has 15 home runs in over 1,000 at bats. 24 years old at AA this season.
Nogowski was picked as a taxi player. He came on board at Springield in late June after playing independent ball ….. and he came on really strong from the onset with the team; out of those 15 HR’s, ten of them were in the last two seasons. He also had several game runs this year at Springfield where his BA was well into the .310 – .330 range and he ended the season with a high OBP and .295 BA., giving him the 2nd highest BA for players who were there more than 50 or so games. I don’t know for sure, I suspect his selection was an opportunity to further develop his bat, make up for the time he lost since he came in later in the season, and see how he would do along side the steeper competition presented at AFL.
October 12, 2017 at 7:35 am #35872Nagowski’s selection might also have been part of an agreement for him to re-sign here as a minor league FA.
October 12, 2017 at 7:39 am #35873Edmundo Sosa drove in a run and scored another in Surprise’s Wednesday evening win in the Arizona Fall League.

October 12, 2017 at 8:07 am #35878If I remember correctly, Nogowski has already resigned with the organization for next season.
October 12, 2017 at 8:11 am #35879Speaking of Knizner, the former middle infielder player first base last night for the Surprise Saguaros.

ParticipantDerek… I didn’t want to make this some kind of Mercado v. Knizner competition. If there was a first half winner it was no doubt Mercado. What changed my mind was that in the second half Oscar seemed to revert back to some of the problems (6/6 Avr= .335. Finished .287) that plagued his career offensive numbers. Whereas Knizner was electric after 7-4-17. (7/4 Avr=.132 after 9 games. Finished .324)
Mercado AVR= JULY .185 AUG .244 OPS=JULY .469 AUG .760 Ks= JULY 19 AUG 19
Knizner AVR= JULY .414 .AUG .309 OPS=JULY 1.025 AUG .825 Ks= JULY 9.AUG 8
Both had equal amount of ABS JULY/AUG.I should point out that Knizner was playing at Rookie League Johnson City at the end of ’16. Started ’17 at Low-A Peoria and then jumped to Springfield as an emergency replacement for Lino who went on the DL. A jump from the AA League to AA ball in half a season is significant… and Knizner improved on his offensive numbers also. He’s got to get some kind of award for that.
I’m hoping that both of these guys have a rewarding AFL and do the same at Memphis next season.

ParticipantThe bad news – Surprise only has 3 hits after 7 innings today.
The good news – Mercado has 1 and Knizner has 1.

October 14, 2017 at 4:15 am #36007Speaking of Knizner, the former middle infielder player first base last night for the Surprise Saguaros.
At Johnson City Rookie level in 2016, Knizner played first base 19 games and catcher 21 games. Freshman year an NC State he played 3rd. He learned the position and converted to catcher his sophomore year. He was an All Star middle infielder in high school, but also played first and third, too (as well as being the football team’s starting quarter back and and a punter). I don’t think he has had any middle infield time at NC State or in the minors, though. Perhaps he was playing at first to test potential versatility?
