The 40-man roster is at 35 and it’s likely that at the present there no one else of the 35 that will be taken off. IMO the five spots will go to Gomber-O’Neill-Mercado-Pearce with ArReyes and Wisdom on the bubble. The Cards may choose to leave a spot open for any free agent and/or rule-5 acquisitions. Any trade that is made might open a spot or two if the trade for 3 for 1 for example.

Unless he is traded, Mercado should be put on the 40-man.

Three St. Louis Cardinals prospects appeared for Surprise on Saturday. Edmundo Sosa reached base three times and scored a run. Oscar Mercado was involved in a scary outfield collision and Josh Lucas took the loss.

Interesting comment out of the AFL on Kninzer:

Knizner’s conversion behind the dish continues to trend in the right direction. He guided fellow Cardinals farmhand Sandy Alcantara through four scoreless innings against a powerful Peoria offense, and threw out the speedy Jonathan Davis stealing in the third.

“He’s good back there,” Owen said. “He blocks well, he throws well, and he handles the staff well. I like him back there.”

I think his emergence gives us more flexibility with Kelly who could go high in a trade.

In Monday Cardinals prospect action from the Arizona Fall League, Andrew Knizner had three hits and caught a two-hitter, but Surprise still lost. John Nogowski went 0-for-4.

Andrew Knizner did not play in the Tuesday, Novemenber 14th game – so I have no idea how it was reported that he had a single in that game.

Bad link. Was the 11/6 game. Correcting now.

    Here is the corrected information.

In the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday, three St. Louis Cardinals prospects saw action. Oscar Mercado and Edmundo Sosa doubled and plated three between them. Josh Lucas pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

I wish Knizner would be playing at 1B when he isn’t catching. His hitting is what I am most interested. It’s been a long season for his knees at catcher.

For those who did not read the game recap (shame on you!), be aware that Jordan Hicks is making the start for Surprise today, his first after eight relief appearances. Just two games remain on the schedule.

Unless the playoffs for the AZL Fall League have changed, the Surprise Saguaros were eliminated a few days ago. As of now, they have 2 games left. Even if they win both and Peoria loses both, Surprise would still be two games out. Someone’s math is a little off on the whole league!!

    From MLB.com’s William Boor:
#STLCards Jordan Hicks is throwing ??? in #AFL today – just hit 102.6 mph, according to TrackMan.

In his first start and final appearance, Jordan Hicks pitched well, allowing only an unearned run in three innings. Oscar Mercado doubled, walked, drove in one and scored another, but Surprise lost.
