Update: Daniel Poncedeleon will make his MLB debut.
#stlcards need starters Monday and Tuesday. Poncedeleon and Gomber are both rested. Hudson could go Tuesday on normal rest, but only if they add him to the 40-man first. Could they add both of the former and see how Monday goes first? Interesting possibilities.

I am guessing it will be Gomber Monday and Poncedeleon Tuesday. Hudson would be a great choice if they can find a way to add him to the 40 man roster. Maybe DFA Voit? And if they do that maybe they could make a trade a la Valera, Lucas, etc.
Poncedeleon last pitched on the 15th and Gomber on the 17th, so this sequence makes sense based on their rest.

Remember all the starting pitching depth we had early in the year? We’re down to starting the #8 and 9 guys in the rotation now. The injuries have been ridiculous.
NO one is happy with the injuries, but I am glad to see the kids pitch. Maybe we even get to see Hudson pitch, but it seems he has bubble wrap on him until 2019.
Hudson has shown great improvement this year.
They are not going to debut Hudson so long as he has to go on the 40 man. I’d imagine he might get a September start or callup for bullpen help but not before that.
Au contrare. Hudson was exceptional in 2017, too. Two-time all-star and Texas League Pitcher of the Year. His Springfield line last year and his Memphis results this year are very close.
The 40-man decision has nothing to do with September. He would take a roster spot then heading into the off-season, just as he would if he was added now.
In fact, if they were planning to use him at all this year, it would be even worse to wait until September, because they would not receive the full benefit of his pitching. The only possible difference would be losing an option year if they add him now and send him down in August, but honestly, he isn’t going to need three more years to stick in the majors, anyway. (Another downside to 2018 would be the potential loss of whoever is bumped off the 40-man to create room for him, but that is probably not a big deal, and again has no impact on July vs. September.)
Bottom line, call him up now or wait until 2019. Do not get caught in the middle.

A little red faced that I didn’t realize they had to be on the 40 for the September call but it makes obvious sense.
Maybe they’re hoping to use him in a trade? The extra year thing doesn’t make a lot of sense, as he probably won’t be a star anyway.
If Poncedeleon wants to stay in the game after 5, he’ll need to be perfect thru 5 and/or a pitch count in the 30s.
It worries me that with all these young talented pitchers coming up,we don’t have a young talented catcher to work with them. Lets face Molina is not the catcher he use to be. True.. his offense has gotten better but his ability to call a game,and his defense has slacked off. Although he will go down as one of the greatest game callers of all time, he is not one of the best game callers in recent years. Not all the blame, but part of the blame has to go on Molina for our bullpens lack of success the last couple years. I feel he’s good first time through the order but as the game goes on, he’s not able to adjust to hitters adjustments.To old school. Yadi will forever be the love of many cardinal fans and what he has done in a Cardinal uniform will never be forgotten but there has to come a time where you say Thank you and will please pass on your knowledge to these young catchers who we hope with your guidance will be as good as you were one of these days.
Larussa once said if Yadi was batting 000,he would still be in the line-up every day… Do you think Larussa would still say that ?
I wonder if Carpenter is licking his chops heading into the launching pad at Great American? Anybody went to venture a guess as to how many dingers he has in this series? I am going to predict a meager one.

That depth is pretty amazing thus far.
Wainwright, Reyes, Wacha, and now Martinez out – Mikolas anchoring a rotation with Weaver, Flaherty, Gant, and Poncedeleon (or Gomber or Hudson) Fascinating.
We have a half dozen relievers that have no business having a 40 man spot so bumping one of them for Hudson should be the least of our concerns.
gs, Schafer doesn’t come to the point. How did all these losers wind up in St. Louis and that should have been his conclusion.
ps, they are not walk-ons, someone paid them a lot of money to show up.Ryan Sherriff is on the Memphis roster. He would have to be promoted before going on St. Louis’ 60-day. That has financial considerations both short and long term.
I sure hope this disaster in the bullpen and in the OF doesn’t make Bowtie and Dewitt gun shy to add a couple arms for the bullpen this offseason. I’d honestly entertain the idea of a 2 year extension for Norris if they don’t trade him.
I think they need to fix the pen with a couple internal options and a couple FA.
There is no such thing as too much pitching as the saying goes. That is why I wanted us to retain Lynn, even on the one-year option.
But I do like seeing the young guys get a chance to show their stuff. Realistically, right now with the club 8 1/2 out, and losing 3 of 5 to the team they have to beat, it is a good time to go with a youth movement the rest of the year and give the kids a lot of playing time.
Not necessarily a tear-down-and-rebuild deal, but at least see what some of these guys do with some regular opportunities over the last couple of months.
bikemike, with the benefit of hindsight, it is hard for me to miss Lynn. As it has turned out, two years of Mikolas is looking better than one year of Lynn, for roughly the same money. And that did seem to be their eventual tradeoff. Seems no way they would have signed Mikolas (and maybe others) had they dropped $17.4 MM for one year of Lynn.
I am not sure about the recent interest in Greg Garcia.
