We are again going with one thread for all spring training games. Please keep the talk here to the games themselves and use other threads for general news items. Thanks.

Opening day features split squad games. If you want to see more prospects, pick the road game, though the starters won’t play more than three or four innings in either game, I imagine…

Spring Game #1, Saturday 2/24, 12:05 CT: Home vs. Marlins. Starter Matthew Liberatore
TV Bally Sports Midwest, Radio KMOX, Cards Radio Network

Spring Game #2, Saturday 2/24, 12:10 CT: At Mets (Port St. Lucie). Starter Zack Thompson
    TV SNY/MLB.TV, Radio WCBS/MLB app

Starting pitchers are scheduled for two innings each. Other pitchers scheduled to throw on Saturday: Helsley, Romero, Pallante, Robertson, O’Brien, Kloffenstein, King, McGreevy, Fernandez, Santos.

Minor edit but the games are February, not March.

Thanks. Consistency is usually good, but not in this case. 😉

Kloffenstein is another starter along with McGreevy listed as an available pen guy. We will have to see if that role is just for ML camp, but we should remember that we have more starters than slots for them. We should also remember that a first round pedigree means the org will beat that horse until the bones turn to dust. There is plenty of worm turning to be done so stay tuned.

I used to tune in to a ST training game or two, but practice games no longer get my attention. I’ll be happy when the Cardinals open the season with four games in LA against the Dodgers on March 28th. Well, maybe I won’t be so happy after those four games are played…

We’ve been worried about shortstop depth and here we are at the first game action and neither can answer the bell. We are fielding Fermin and Gamboa. Fate will find the soft spot.

Granted I have seen a ton of him, but Moises Gomez looks like he is not “in the best shape of his life”.

Daniel Descalso’s Jupiter squad fell to the Marlins, 9-8. NRI outfielder Matt Koperniak had three hits, including a double, and three RBI.

Marmol’s road warriors defeated the Mets at Port St. Lucie, 10-5. Zack Thompson tossed two scoreless innings on a hit, walk and a strikeout.

I watched the game today on Bally Sports Midwest. Here’s my impressions/thoughts:

Gorman, fit and focused, looks like he’s going to be a monster this year. Hope his back can stay healthy. The announcers think he’ll get a fair amount of AB’s at DH with Donovan at 2B.

Carlson looked more aggressive at the plate than in 2023. Didn’t do anything against the right-handed pitchers he faced.

Pages stretches his left leg out straight and to the left before every pitch.

Cho is fun to watch at the plate, but he has a fairly high leg kick and a lot of moving parts. He’s 20 years old.

Koperniak had a great day…. 3 for 3 and clutch. If he can continue the good work all spring and at Memphis, we might see him get some AB’s at Busch this year. He was a non-drafted free agent that was signed in 2020, but did not play because of COVID restrictions. He OPS’d .799 with 18 HR between Springfield and Memphis in 2023.

Helsley looked like an elite closer.

Romereo hasn’t found his groove yet. Still has high end reliever mentality, IMO.

King pitched well, IMO. Would have easily gotten out of his one inning of work with no runs allowed were it not for the wind and sub-par defense.

Fernandez hit 98 on the radar gun. He has a smooth delivery and can get outs.

Rodriguez lacks any sort of finesse.

The Cardinals have some thunder with Arenado, Goldschmidt, Gorman, and Contreras….then, there’s those not quite proven bats of Walker, Nootbaar, and Donovan. I hope Edman bats leadoff. With all the additions, and with Helsley coming of age, the bullpen has potential for being really good, if not great. Bruce Benedict, now a scout for the White Sox, was at the game today. Could the Cardinals be a WS contender with Dylan Cease added to the rotation?

Not too sure the Cardinals can win with Eddie as their primary CF’er, but I think they can win with him getting the most PA’s hitting lead-off. And I agree that Gorman may evolve into an incredibly dangerous hitter. Watching him last season convinced me that he’ll eventually hit 40 HR’s in a season and 50’s not out of the question. The baseball comes off his bat as though it were leaving a silo.

Here is the same information plus more. On the right are the other players on the bus to West Palm. Many will enter the game later…

Guessing Arenado, Goldy and the others have a 1 pm tee time this afternoon… 😉

P.S. For those anxious for lineups each day, the Cardinals open the clubhouse at 8 am ET. As soon as they do, the writers make a bee line to the board, where the lineups are posted.

And this is the absurdity of baseball. Drew Rom gives up 2 easy home run balls that are smoked off the bats of Altuve and Bregman – but they go down as Rom getting 2 quick outs because the wind is gusting in from left and both balls only make it to the track.

Rom looks really wild early on.

Rom looked terrible, but gets credit for a 0.00 ERA so far. Woodford seemed to have a lot of the same results last year – batters smoking the ball all over the field, but a lot of those balls just getting caught. The only real difference was Woodford at least was throwing consistent strikes.

And ROM looked great in the 2nd inning doing what he does well – keeping hitters off balance with his different motions.
