There are two relief pitchers going (Nunez-Granillo) plus Roby-Hjerpe-Paniagua. I wonder if the organization will try to convert the three starters to relievers. That seems to be a trend in MLB. Just thinking.

Probably not. The way the AFL works, the Cardinals will have one designated starter and the others will work in relief. But it has nothing to do with their future role. For example, Tink Hence was a reliever in 2022 there.

The AFL starts tomorrow – Monday 10/2.

Speaking of Hence, as I understand it, 2024 figures as his 5th year in the system even though he didn’t play in his draft year, 2020.

As always, we will have AFL game recaps each morning starting Tuesday.

Paniagua is a little surprising…I guess the team still likes him, and wanted him to get a bit more work in. Still, it’ll be good to have some Cardinal related info to look at for a bit longer.

Is it known who the designated starter is? Roby could definitely use it to build his innings up a bit.

Roby and also Hjerpe, who just had the two brief outings earlier in September.

Did you read that somewhere, bling? If so, where? Unless he was doing a lot of throwing since the season ended, Hjerpe isn’t built up to start. Also, each organization usually gets only one starting pitcher in the AFL.

P.S. I guess they could get creative and use him as an “opener”…

I guess I assumed he’s been working for the last month, just not in games. What was he doing?

Working out is very different from building up pitch counts in game action. Otherwise, they wouldn’t need spring training. They could just tell everyone to be ready when they report.

Anyway, I would be very surprised if they are ramping up Hjerpe to start at this stage of the year. I am expecting an inning or two per week.

The Scorpions game is under way. Victor Scott leading off and playing CF. Jeremy Rivas batting 8th at SS. Good luck to them.

I see that Hjerpe pitched a crisp 8 pitch inning. Nice. Roby also was successful.

I wonder where our AFL pitchers will start in the minors next season? We’ll see how they perform there first.

I would guess they will start where they finished 2023. Maybe Roby starts at AAA?

From the start I saw in Springfield, I would say Roby is legit. He hit 100 on his opening pitch and blew everyone away. He gave up a run on a opposite-field double on a pitch that the hitter was late and fooled.

He reminded me a little of Greceffo when he was going well. Both arms appear to me to be better than Woodford, Rom, McGreavy, and Thomas by a clear margin.

With Roby its always going to be about his arm holding up.

Scott bunting his way on twice is interesting.

I am also enthused by Scott’s three walks the first week.
