We got a break in we won’t have to face Fried in this series. Morton won’t be an easy one to handle, however.

I wonder when Goldschmidt and Arenado are going to get off the homer schneid and launch a long one or two?

What a lineup for Woodford to have to face in his debut as a rotation starter! I’d say if he can get through three or four innings successfully, sit him down and let him enjoy his success. Then, next time out, try to let him throw the now standard 100 or so pitches.

It will be interesting to see how forum favorite Jake Woodford handles his first start of the year.

If he throws strikes, gets quite a few ground balls, even if some find openings I will be happy with the effort.

I think this is where having made 50 or 60 starts in AAA pays off.

You never know what can happen in and given game but I’d like to see what Woodford can do with 6-8 starts as a rotation member.

Not mopping up, not filling in – as a member. Pressure and expectation will be different. Let’s see how he handles it.

Wainwright is going to take time to heal and then get ready to start. It is a great opportunity for Woodford. As long as he pitches credibly, he should hold the spot and who knows what else will happen with the rotation before Waino gets back. But if he falters over his first two or three starts, Liberatore is waiting in Memphis.

The MLB schedule on ESPN is showing this game starting at 6:45 and being broadcast on ESPN+. Seems odd. Even if true I’m assuming it will still be blacked out in Oklahoma.

Yeah, it’s a night game, osuagec. I had to double check to make sure after seeing it listed as an afternoon start.

Why isn’t Matz starting the 4th game of the year?

Mrperkins, I wondered the same thing. I don’t think it’s because Woodford is considered better. So it’s got to be one of 2 reasons:

More Likely: Matz is coming an injury year where he didn’t throw many innings so perhaps he was going to throw last in the rotation no matter what in an attempt to limit some innings and maybe skip a start or two.

Less Likely: Whoever threw 5th to start the year could have possibly been available out of the pen for game one if a long relief position presented itself and maybe Matz would have made for a better matchup than Woodford against the Astros.

I’m guessing it’s more the first explanation- that Matz was going to pitch last no matter what as they monitor their innings. But 4th or 5th doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

Might just be a case of not lining up the 5-man with 2 consecutive lefties.

Yes, the correct start time is 6:45 p.m. That was my mistake.

I wish it was right, BW. It’s a real nice day today. At any rate, I thought they may have changed it for TV, so I checked.

As the late great Tim McCarver would say, “This is the big leagues man.” There are a lot of good lineups in the majors. If Woody wants to be a regular big league starter then this is part of it.

I hope I am not going to jinx things but I honestly believe this might be our most potent lineup since 2004. There are really no weak links one through nine except when we have to use the backup catcher. If we can receive some decent pitching this could be a really dangerous team.

Yeah, it’s not easy to find a bargain from top to bottom, gscottar. It remains to be seen if the kids can continue to rip the baseball, but even if a couple of them begin to falter, there’s depth on this team that provides other options. As for that ’04 line-up, I almost felt sorry for opposing pitchers. Facing that line-up was not unlike drawing the short straw on the bomb disposal unit…

Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard from todays early games:

    Brewers 10
    Mets 0
After six innings. Brice Turang a grand slam in the 7-run Milwaukee 6th inning. I believe you can chalk this one up in the W column for the Brew Crew.

The Nootz sure has been scarce.

We don’t have a bottom of the order. The lineup would work just as good in reverse order. I think there is a word for that.

A little pregame Redbird baseball trivia…The ’82 best of 5, Cardinals/Braves NLCS seems like yesterday to me and I attended two of those games. An “unofficial” and an official one. At any rate, although a couple of them involve 2 players, these shouldn’t be too awfully difficult to qualify for the Buckner oven mitt…

    1. Who were the 2 starting pitchers in the “unofficial” Game #1 of that ’82 NLCS?

    2. Who was the only player on either team to hit a HR in that 3 game Redbird sweep?

    3. Willie McGee came in second in hits with 4, but collected 5 RBI’s in that NLCS to lead all Cardinal players in that important category. He also led all Cardinals in runs scored as he crossed HP 4 times. Who were the two Cardinal players who led in hits with 5 of them?

As always, the evil baseball gypsies are hovering above your $20 hot dog and at the ready to drop a spider right into the mustard if you look it up prior to answering…

It is my understanding that Nootbaar is nursing some kind of wrist injury (or, more likely, Oli has a man crush on Burleson because of his hot bat).

1td – Your quiz is unfair because it’s just too hard, given that we can’t cheat. If the answers don’t show up pretty soon, mudville is going to cheat anyway.

While I was in the process of formulating the trivia questions, I happened to notice something that I probably should have known, but wasn’t at all aware of, that I thought was interesting. Despite managing the great Yankee teams of the late ’90’s and early ’00’s, and participating in literally countless post-season games as field manager, Joe Torre never once participated in either a play-off or WS game during his entire career as a player. He always just missed the post-season with 3 very good teams of his playing era consisting of the Braves, Cardinals and Mets. The guy played with Spahn, Aaron, Mathews, Gibson, Carlton, Brock, Seaver, Staub and Koosman and still couldn’t break through. Oh well, I suppose fate was kinder to Joe than it was to Ernie Banks.
