stlcard25ParticipantMan, this series could be really tough with Wheeler and Nola to face. The positive is if we can beat one of those two, you like our chances with a lefty in game 3.
October 5, 2022 at 7:05 am #203313
jj-cf-stlParticipantWheeler has been tough on us, need to find a way to score on him, even if it’s small ball.
October 5, 2022 at 7:17 am #203314
stlcard25ParticipantIf there’s some small silver lining, it’s that Wheeler has been quite a bit better at home this year. His 3.85 ERA on the road is pretty average. He’s also marginally better against lefties than righties.
On the Wheeler note, I recall that some were interested in Wheeler when he was a free agent post-Mets. Generally it was thought that his 5 year/$118M deal was an overpay. That would have been a smart pickup, even at that cost. A huge bargain for an ace level pitcher.
October 5, 2022 at 7:55 am #203315Well, what do you know? It’s nice to have a thread for a game that matters.
October 5, 2022 at 9:16 am #203326Apparently Helsley jammed one of his fingers in the game Tuesday night. We better hope he is ready for this wild card series.

ParticipantGoing with mikolas. He has probably earned it but I don’t know. He hasn’t been consistent though at times he hasn’t had run support. If they don’t go with waino and our pitching sucks, will be lots of questions but that’s what marmol is getting paid for.

After Wainwright’s last four starts, there aren’t many advocating letting him start. Playing to nostalgia isn’t the way to win games and series.

jj-cf-stlParticipantHelsley will have to rub some dirt on it and walk it off!
All hands on deck!
October 5, 2022 at 11:21 am #203333Yeah, last night’s TV broadcast claimed it was the middle finger of his right hand. That ain’t good good. Next thing you know, he’ll get a package delivered that contains a hunting knife…
October 5, 2022 at 12:11 pm #203335It may or may not make any difference, but neither Wheeler or Nola have ever made any sort of an appearance in a solitary post-season game, and they’ll both be working in hostile surroundings later on this week. Unlike the fans in Philadelphia, Cardinal fans don’t normally bring laser pointers to ballgames, but I certainly hope they’re loud and raucous at Busch Stadium this weekend.

Or batteries
October 5, 2022 at 3:20 pm #203356gscottar…Yeah, that too.
October 5, 2022 at 6:42 pm #203403We will meet up with Sosa, who is hitting .315 for Philly. 159 OPS+ But we have Jo Jo. Well, we probably won’t since he isn’t going to make the roster. But we have DeJong.
October 5, 2022 at 7:15 pm #203406We’ll know the Game 1 starter around noon Thursday, as he will speak to the media along with Marmol and Mo as part of workout day. Perhaps they’ll disclose the roster as well. But maybe not if they hadn’t spoken with everyone yet…
October 5, 2022 at 7:29 pm #203410Have we got the Rally Squirrel all ready to make an appearance if the ship starts to sink? The last time we met Philadelphia in the playoffs that’s what it took to pull out the win.
October 6, 2022 at 12:03 pm #203449Can’t wait to see how our team performs in the post season. My guess is better than expected, and certainly better than their last few weeks. They’ll get a good test tomorrow against Wheeler, and I hope they understand it doesn’t get any easier after that. I’ll be cheering them on from the 3rd deck, and weather looks good!
October 6, 2022 at 12:13 pm #203450#STLCards have LHP Jose Quintana scheduled to open Game 1 of the NL Wildcard Series against the #Phillies at Busch Stadium on Friday.

October 6, 2022 at 12:19 pm #203451Quintana’s probably as good of a choice as any.
October 6, 2022 at 12:21 pm #203452
jj-cf-stlParticipantEasily been our best starter the last 5 or 6 times thru the rotation.
October 6, 2022 at 12:39 pm #203453Philadelphia has a lot more offense than we do.
Goldschmidt and Arenado, our big guns, have just about done nothing for three weeks.
Philadelphia has a couple of pitchers capable of shutting the other team down.
We have no pitchers capable of shutting the other team down. It was the hope 2-3 years ago that Flaherty would be that shut down ace. But that’s yet to materialize.Bottom line is this – we are sunk. Doom and gloom. Woe and despair.
Game #1 will be 6-1 Phillies
Game #2 will be 7-2 PhilliesBye Yadi. Bye Albert.
On to 2023…….

October 6, 2022 at 12:53 pm #203454I like the choice of Q also. Didn’t matter to me if it was him or Mikolas, then the other guy gets game 2. The interesting choice would be game 3.
October 6, 2022 at 1:02 pm #203455Rats – Look at this article on MLB that ranks the potential starting lineups for the playoff teams. They have the Cardinals with the 4th best lineup behind only LA, Toronto, and Atlanta. They back it up with team ranks. Really getting tired of your gloom and doom!!
https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-teams-best-lineups-2022
4. Cardinals
MLB ranks: Fifth in wRC+ (114), OPS (.745) and wOBA (.326), tied for fifth in runs (772)
8. Phillies
MLB ranks: Seventh in runs (747), eighth in wOBA (.322) and OPS (.739), 10th in wRC+ (106)
October 6, 2022 at 2:30 pm #203457TNRoberson201…Don’t encourage him…Haha!
October 6, 2022 at 2:42 pm #2034582235 and counting down ’til first pitch. Should be a good day of post-season baseball tomorrow with four games slated. I’ll try to watch all four of them. Anyone else?
