Hope the offense can stay hot and pounds the Cubs starter. Stroman pitches tomorrow, so that will be a tougher assignment.
The Cardinals held a commanding 12-3 lead in the visitor half of the 9th when Marmol summoned Pujols to PH for Donovan with a basrunner at 3B, 2 outs, and the Cubs BP entirely depleted. Now, I’m the first guy in line to watch the great slugger take his rips, but I thought the entire thing was a bit over the top. Even Albert looked a little embarrassed to me as he was standing in the batter’s box prior to the HBP tossed by DH Reyes. The sequence of events was not at all unlike attempting a SB when the outcome of a ballgame has already been decided. I guess I’m referencing unwritten rules, but some things are simply better off left alone.
Still no Helsley although I am pretty sure the baby was born a couple of days ago. I am not trying to sound insensitive but he has been away from the team for almost a week now. Considering the issue with Yadi, Mo obviously has a lenient time off policy.

Unless/until we know the circumstances, how can anyone call the treatment of the Helsley situation lenient? Maybe he isn’t a future Hall of Famer and doesn’t own a basketball team, but still has a life.
My hope is that the Helsley family is ok since this started as paternity leave. But it has a limited time scope and he seems to have needed more time.
For those who measure this way, I don’t believe the Cards have yet lost any games due to Helsley being unavailable.
1tough, I think your post is on the wrong thread, but I will offer another perspective on Pujols pinch hitting here.
There may have been some number of fans who bought tickets to that game hoping to see Albert play one last time. So perhaps even many Cubs fans were ok with it, especially since it was a blowout anyway. (Though I suspect the manager’s motive may have been to enhance Pujols’ individual stats.)

I too found the Albert 9th inning ab in a lopsided affair a little off beat, TD. I bet Albert would have preferred not ph’ing under those circumstances. I was hoping he wouldn’t homer, as I rightly or wrongly, believe that it would have cheapened the magnificent record(s) that Albert is about to accomplish.
Well, besides the catching and SS positions, we are hands down better than these guys everywhere else. This should equate to winning these last two games and riding off into the Wrigley sunset for the last time until 2023. I still don’t believe that Gorman hasn’t teed off yet in this series……talk about a ticking time bomb ready to explode. And with CardsFanInChiTown in attendance this evening, it should give our boys that extra boot to kick a little cubbie keester.
And to the esteemed gentlemen (Mr. Perkins and Cardinal In France) who have corrected a couple of my rare recent grammar miscues……. thanks gentlemen! I know one thing……if Mr. Perkins and Cardinal In France didn’t care about ol’ Pugs, they would have kept letting me stumble through game thread after game thread looking like a grammar goon.

BW…Yeah, I understand that. Like I mentioned, I’m a fan and want to be first guy in line to see him hit. And I also understand that the paying gate should get to see what they paid to see. The kid in me says sure, give him an AB and hopefully he rips a 2 run tater to not only make it 14-3, but also to pound away at the record book. It’s perfectly fine with me. But maybe not with the opposition. As you reminded me of Timmy’s oft used phrase, “It’s the Big Leagues, son.” That was basically what I was driving at.
Today’s Cubs starter looks to be 31 year old journeyman Luke Farrell. He’s been in Iowa this year all year and sports a 5.03 ERA there. You’d think the Cards should score a few runs. Hopefully Mikolas is on his game today and the Cards can win it something like 6-1. Like Pugs, I think Gorman is due to launch a couple soon.
Pugs…I agree about Albert’s thoughts. It was reasonably apparent to me simply by his facial expression as he stood in the box that he was a little uncomfortable. Then, when he was replaced by the PR’er after the HBP, my thoughts were somewhat confirmed as the camera panned to the Redbird dugout which showed him sitting and having a smiling conversation with a couple of his teammates. Obviously, I couldn’t hear the conversation, but I have a reasonably good idea of it’s course. No big deal though. Just a subtle observation and point of view on my part.
Like I said, I am not trying to be insensitive regarding Helsley. Hopefully his wife and baby are doing well. The picture they posted on social media a couple of days ago looked good but perhaps there are things we don’t know, which is fine.
I’m old school and military. As much as I try I dont even like the 3 days off for paternity leave let alone the extra time. Plenty of tools for Family planning só you dont have the kid during the season. I dont think they pull guys out of Fox holes tô go spend 3 days with their birthing wife– though that may have Changed also.
gscottar…Yeah, my only concerns were founded on what I was led to believe by the local media, which was that he’d be in Chicago for the start of this series. Now, with his absensce, I’m obviously hoping that it isn’t a result of any sort of complications insofar as the health and well being of his wife or daughter. Hopefully, he simply wanted to spend a little more time with them prior to rejoining the team. Which is perfectly understandable in my view.
Carioca…No, as you mentioned, they certainly don’t immediately pluck anyone from a foxhole if they’re indeed deployed. I’m not certain how paternity is addressed at present, but command wasn’t required to let you go anywhere within about a couple of months time frame of the birth of your child. In any event, we’re talking about a baseball game. Not a military deploymemt. Big difference…Haha!
I believe we enter this game tonight with 5.5 game lead over Milwaukee. They have their final game out west against the Dodgers tonight. It will be Houser against Heaney. Hopefully the Doyers can pound on Houser like they pounded Burnes last night.
Din-din today is the weekly trip to the Gasthof, the Amish restaurant. Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy, noodles, green beans, dressing, sweet potatoes, some cherry cobbler and some chocolate soft serve ice cream. Yum yum……

A lot of companies are implementing longer paternity leaves. Which is a positive change. Fathers should have as much bonding with their infant as possible.
On Helsley: I join others’ concern for the family. We don’t know. Mrs H might have had a C section.
When they conceived back last Fall, Helsley was just a lowly middle inning pitcher. One save in three SVO the entire year. Hardly someone that has to use methods to have their baby in the off season. Maybe they’ve been trying for years and cant afford to get cute.
I personally think it’s unfair to lump him in with Molina as some have on Twitter. But even there, see Bernie’s piece for some good thoughts.
Finally, it is somewhat stigmatizing to be placed on a ‘restricted list’, the same thing that happens to a miscreant. But that’s just the labor rules, no pun intended.
socalcardsfan…Yeah, the word restricted carries with it negative overtones, but as you mentioned, the list is simply what I understand to be an area of a labor agreement which excludes management from being obligated to pay an employee their salary after the agreed time period alloted for that employee’s absence has expired. Can’t really begrudge management for brokering it into the contract. It’s also my understanding that management, if they so choose, can pay the employee for the extra time missed if they feel it’s warranted. Haha…Most of these things are pretty simple, but labor attorneys have a flair for authoring documents in a manner that’s difficult to cipher for a layman. That way, they can demand the big bucks when called uopn to explain all of the gibberish!
