It’s not possible for me to dispute that baseball is the easiest on the human body of the 4 major team sports, but you almost have take into account a Big League schedule that consists of 162 games. That’s a long grind that involves a lot of airports, hotels and venues over the course of 6 months or more. Furthermore, it’s primarily played in the summer with plenty of contests being decided in blistering heat outdoors and not in an indoor basketball or hockey venue. I’m certain that fatigue sets in at some point. Sheesh, I’m a little tired and need some rest. Think I’ll take a little nappy time…
I played every position except 3rd, SS and 2B cuz I sucked on hard hit grounders. I loved 1B because I got to touch the ball more often and only had to knock down grounders as the base is close. No transfer, no throw.

Pugs, I can’t agree that the word grueling properly applies to anything in baseball except catcher, with the possible exception of having to listen
to the daily blatherings from the likes of Tony LaRussaI think you may be confusing high school or college ball with professional play, Carter. These guys in the majors just don’t sit around playing video games all day until game time. I think we’d be in awe of what it takes to keep playing at this level.
40 years ago a man couldn’t just take a few days off for the birth of a child, but I did it anyway. Caught some grief but never lost my job over it.

Dom 1; Not just the 4 Majors: Beach volley ball, soccer, Rugby, rowing, La Cross Need I go on?
Baseball is more an activity than a sport. Baseball is less reactive but more cerebral, whereas sports like hockey and football you don’t have time to think, just react!
Your point about limo trips to airports and luxury hotels…really?
I made a collage team but a non baseball injury right at the beginning of the season put an end to my playing. According to my dad I would have been the next Duke Snyder.

Pugsley, I think you lost track of origin of the conversation which was the assertion that Goldy may need rest from the terrible grind of catching a ball and stepping on a bag.
I think he’s just in a mini-slump, which is just as likely in April as August
Baseball is mental moreso than physical. But it will tax you physically due to all the quick starts and stops. That can take a toll on your legs and lower half. In playing amateur ball where occasionally we would travel and play say 6 games over an 8 day stretch, I would notice my legs would be tight, and I dropped a few pounds.
But the mental aspect is really intense at the professional levels. As a hitter, every pitch you are going through a hundred scenarios of where the pitch might be, what kind of pitch, and what to do.
Pitching of course is the reverse – what do you throw, where, and why. And on defense you are running through scenarios. It is a lot of mental “what if” preps.

LeGrand…That is interesting. Pugs alluded to the rookie possibly generating some genuine power in this series, so he should like what he sees with Gorman at clean up. Let’s hope he taters up a couple of times and ends his first shift at clean up with somewhere near 11 or 12 TB’s and half dozen or so RBI’s. Also, Goldy must of heard our chatter and became tuckered out and decided to take the night off.
BikeMike…Nice to see someone mention the pitching aspect of baseball. With the exception of a prize fighter, a starting pitcher may possibly perform the most labor intensive task in all of sports when he works.
LeGrand…Haha! Yeah, I’m aware that these guys are pampered and treated like royalty, but still, airports and hotels aren’t always a bargain. In the first 2 or 3 years of my retirement, my wife and I participated in a flurry of travel and it can certainly take a toll. Why heck, not only did it take me almost a week to recover from a single soiree at the Hofbrauhaus in Munchen, but also to persuade Mrs. 1TD to stop giving me the silent treatment…

That goes w/o saying, but catcher doesn’t get 4 days in between starts to recover from narled digits, leg cramps, backswings to the noggin and violent collisions at the plate.
Given a choice I would prefer to pitch
