Cardinals are paying a majority of Fowler’s salary, so not much savings…really just clearing roster space

Don’t forget Edman. The Fowler trade also clears up a spot where Carp can now see time at 2B if there won’t be a DH this year.
Any savings is magnified by the market. The winter of our discontent has suddenly turned to flurries of serendipity.

The Cardinals are paying the Angels $12.75 million as part the deal for Dexter Fowler, so St. Louis is paying all but $1.75 million of Fowler's entire 2021 salary.

The Arenado trade was the best news this off season but getting Fowler off the team is Heaven sent. What great news! Now, trade Bader next.
Brian, you are absolutely spot on. They believe in O’Neil Bader, and Carlson, but this may have been about creating a path for Lane without having to release Justin Williams.
After we sign Odorizzi, we can trade JF or CM to Boston for Benentendi. I’m guessing it will take JF (and maybe more).
The PTBNL will be He Who Shall Not Be Named at the deadline after the Angels are eliminated. He gets his farewell tour after all.
