St. Louis Cardinals Organization Roster Matrix – 2022 Spring Training

NOTE: As of 4/7/22, this version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects changes during 2022 spring training. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix during the 2022 regular season, click here.

This newest refresh of The Cardinal Nation’s exclusive Roster Matrix, covering the St. Louis Cardinals and the minor league system, is presented here.

59 players are in St. Louis’ spring training camp – 38 on the 40-man roster plus 21 non-roster invitees (designated as NRIs). Unless rosters are temporarily expanded in the interim, the Cardinals must drop to 26 players by April 7.

In addition, 153 players began the spring in minor league camp. The vast majority are the players who ended 2021 in the US, plus a handful of others brought over from the Dominican Summer League. The 153 (detailed here) will grow proportionally as players are cut from major league camp.

However, all minor league players listed on the Matrix remain on the roster at the level at which they finished 2021. They will move only when their initial 2022 team assignments are disclosed as camps conclude.

For reference, the previous matrix outlined all organizational transactions during the interrupted and unusual 2021-2022 offseason. It also shows the signing status of Cardinals free agents at both the majors and minors level this winter.

A refresher

If you are new to The Cardinal Nation and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

As the 2022 big league spring camp opened, the St. Louis Cardinals had 260 players under contract from top to bottom, including an almost-full 40-man roster (38).

The 40-man members are called out in bold. Non-roster invitees are designated with (NRI) following their name. That will be struck through when they are cut from big league camp (NRI).

The matrix places each of the 260 by position at his assigned level in the system at the end of 2021 as well as by position. Many of these team assignments will surely change as spring training ends, but the Roster Matrix is not intended to be a projection, but rather a current view.

The matrix is updated whenever transactions occur.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization plus a decade of history.

(Do not be concerned about the order of the players’ names within position. It has no relative significance.)
