Unfortunately? What about defense? So many comments are about replacing any player not hitting, but what about the runs they prevent with superior defense? Wong, Molina, and Fowler are all averaging under 200 in the postseason also, but I only see complaining about DeYoung. It’s a good thing we didn’t replace Ozuna for the postseason when he was in a major slump and isn’t even a great fielder. I would also point out that DeYoung was our only all-star. He could break out of this slump at any time, but if he doesn’t, we still need his defense. He is certainly not the only hitter in the lineup that hasn’t been producing lately. I wish I had kept track of all the defensive plays in the second half of the season and the postseason that may not have been made without DeYoung at short stop, Edman at third, and Bader in center field (the last going back to September). We need to value defense as much as offense.

I’d like to see Bader back in Center field Wednesday and Edman back at third base. We need the defense and they can still use Carp off the bench for a good left handed pinch hitter. Bader may not be hitting as good as Carp, but I think it’s still a better tradeoff to have Bader in center and his speed on the bases, and because Edman can be back on third base. Edman has made probably 10 plays at third base in the past 2-3 weeks that Carp would not have made. We need to just hope to get our offense from the rest of the lineup.

Shildt did choose offense over defense because he thinks Carp’s hitting better than Bader. But, we NEED Edman at third. He’s a much better fielder than Carp and we’ve paid big time for that today.
