This article is both intriguing and telling. At the time, it was thought that the Cards should really make some hay as they were not competing with some of the bigger boys for the international talent that year, due to penalties those other teams had incurred. I know I had high hopes; and yet during the signing period some of those we signed (Machado being a good example) were even then being questioned by some of the scribes that evaluated talent. Two other teams that up to that point had not made many ripples were the Padres and the White Sox, and their signings that period seemed to serve as a launching pad; they are both now considered prime locals for international talent to go to and have deep farm systems. I know it’s not as simple as I am laying it out, but it seems we missed a golden opportunity back then; and missing out on several other players that we had some level of connection to (L Gurriel, L Robert, etc, ) hasn’t lessened the feeling. I am not sure where the root issue is, I know the international arena can be a crap shoot and the relationships built up over the years are extremely important to the potential signings – but it seems there is some underlying issue in identifying and developing the talent; as well as some “paralysis by analysis”, where we do nothing for fear of doing the wrong thing. Just my thoughts on it. Great overview and summary Brian, appreciate it.

Very nice article on Nunez. I saw a Jesse Sanchez twitter after the signing and he was high on Nunez. He also mentioned that the Cardinals has a little over 500k remaining in their pool allotment for the current signing period. He said only the Orioles at 1.7m had more. For what it’s worth….

Thought I would bump this one since we are closing in on the July new signing period for international players. I’ve not heard anything new about players linked to the Cardinals, but several Cuban players remained unsigned from this last signing period (such as Yolbert Sanchez). Of the 30 top international prospects for 2019-2020 listed by MLB.COM, it looks like only 1, Yiddi Cappe (shortstop-Cuba), remains ‘unaffiliated’ with a major league team once the signing period is officially open. Perhaps we have a shot with him.
