Not at all a good look from Fermin as that miscue out in LF makes it a 2 run lead and places this game up for grabs.
The Red Sox completed a 4 game series sweep over the 1st place Rays today with a 6-1 W at Fenway. It was their 13th consecutive W and they’ve now won 18 of their last 20 games. Sonny Gray was the winning pitcher of decision as he lifts his W/L record to a pretty nice looking 12-1 on the season. Boston was 14 games under .500 in late June and are now not only in the thick of the ALWC race, but also just 6 game off the pace in the ALW. It just shows to go ya’ that good things can happen if you don’t pack it in and just keep playing baseball.
The Redbirds are still sitting at 5 games above sea level, but just can’t seem to gain any sort of steady traction. Hopefully they can take this series with a W in Sunday’s game before heading to So. Cal to face a last place Angel’s team.
I’d have to guess that it’s mass hysteria at Fenway as the Red Sox are now at 12 consecutive W’s and have a chance to place a 4 game series broom job on the ALE leading Rays. Another little league tidbit is that both the Pirates and Senators have now scored more runs than the Dodgers. I didn’t see any of that coming, but that’s baseball.
Last night’s 8th inning illustrated the immediate negative impact of losing Romero. The Cardinals watched as a 2 run lead instantly evaporated, but were able to overcome adversity as they responded with a tie breaking run in the 9th and were then able to hang on for the W. In any event, I don’t know who it will be but, one of the arms from the BP is going to have to emerge as a reasonably viable setup man or it may get more than a little hard to watch. One thing I’m entirely certain of is that last night’s selection as the arm to work the 8th inning is nowhere near to being the solution.
Yeah, I don’t understand why he didn’t have them take a look at it. You could see it was up and out of the zone before even looking at a replay. I’ll take it though.
Latch up the 5 point harness because here comes the Bogsider from Derry to protect a skinny 1 run lead.
I have no problem with the HR he allowed to Carroll, Pugs. He’s protecting a 2 run lead and immediately starts off the first hitter with 3 straight balls before eventually handing over the leadoff BB. That’ll make me say really bad words every time.
Looking up at the board, the Red Sox placed the broom on the Rays today as they swept a doubleheader at Fenway for their 11th consecutive W. They’re now 17-3 in their last 20 games. Gray and Contreras are the pitching and hitting MVP’s on that Red Sox team who are now legitimate postseason contenders over in the AL.
Nice to get the 2 out 2 RBI base hit from Winn to jump out to an early lead. Those 2 out RBI’s are a thing of beauty.
I didn’t take the time to find out which contenders may need LH’ed pitching help from the BP, but I’d have to guess that Romero may very well draw more interest than any of the other names you mentioned, 667. Effective lefty relief pitchers tend to be a hot commodity both down the stretch and during the post-season.
Those are pretty close to being right in line with my guesses, gscottar. I neglected to pick any WC’s simply because I was concerned that my brain would explode if I thought about the countless WC possibilities this early…I decided to wait ’til a little later on to consult with the baseball gypsies on the WC’s. I’ll most likely come to some sort of a definite conclusion on the last day of the regular season…Haha!
TLR received plenty of criticism at times in StL, but the manner in which he manipulated the ’11 Cardinal BP both during the regular season stretch run and throughout the post-season was nothing shy of masterful. Many may recall that the season began with Ryan Franklin as the closer, with Fernando Salas taking over that roll to lead the team with 24 SV’s after Franklin proved to be entirely ineffective early on, with Jason Motte taking over duties as the 9th inning guy during that year’s epic post-season run. At any rate, about the only way that I can think of in which to overcome the lack of a clearly defined effective closer is to have a HOF manager situated on the top step of the dugout. I’ll never forget the way Tony LaRussa was able to skillfully maneuver a far from talented Redbird BP during that unforgettable season.
