Cardinalland is abuzz with the idea of trading Arenado. FO ….”where does he want to play in ’25”. They want to “send him to a solid contender”…. these are the conditions. So I hope that those “contenders” are willing to give up some prime prospects preferably +A guys with ETAs of ’27/’28. I’m I being too optimistic? I’ve been sifting through the “contender’s farm systems looking for prospects fitting into that category. There some good ones but we’ll never get those guys. Why not?…. I’ve been following the Cards for too long a time to know better. I really shouldn’t be getting my hopes up.

I hope nobody got their hopes up for something at the winter meetings.

The draft lottery luck has already made the meetings a success.

Well we knew without a shadow of a doubt that there would be no additions by the Cardinals at the winter meetings. The only question is would there be any substractions. Those are still forthcoming.

97% of mlb clubs fail to win a ring every season, and hope for better luck next season. More is better.

I guess nobody was chomping at the bit to snap up Arenado before somebody else did.

He will be gone soon enough. These PBO’s do most deals by cell phone I would imagine. No need for a luxury suite.

If Arenado were a FA with Bergman and Torres, what is the best contract Nolan could sign?

I was wondering that too, jj. I would think most organizations already have somebody who can field 3b and hit singles. Maybe not though.

Would 2/40 be his top offer?

Maybe 3/50 or 3/55. Which is about what we’re paying him. But that’s the open market. In a trade, a team has to give up prospects and still pay a price for the player. That means the Cards have to pay down the contract to get anything in return. Plus you have the factor of Nolan only wanting certain teams.

I expect the Cards to kick in $5 million per year and get 1-2 40-grade prospects back. Something like that. Basically a salary dump. It’s possible Bill decides to pay more to get a real prospect, but that doesn’t seem likely. I could also see a salary swap happening where we get a CFer back.

Say Arenado goes, who is playing 3rd base….I think Donovan’s best position defensively is 2nd base not sure how much 3rd he has played. I guess Saggese.

That could be a little scary on the corners at least for fielding

The lineup would look something like

    CF….Siani ($800K)
    OF….Nootbar ($2,850,000)
    OF….Burleson ($800K)
    1B….Contreras ($18 Mill)
    2B….Donovan ($4 Mill)
    DH….Walker/Gorman/TBD ($800K each)
    3B….Saggese ($800K
    C…..Pages/Herrera ($800K each)
    SS….Winn ($800K)

    WOOf
Starting lineup 1-9 would make $29,650,000 or about the same as Mookie Bets.

Whatever each poster sets as Nado’s max free agent contract, subtract it from the 64mil hes owed from us.

Any disinterest will be due to his contract.

Say Arenado goes, who is playing 3rd base

    Gorman.

    1. Donovan 2B (L) UT
    2. Winn SS (R)
    3. Nootbaar LF (L)
    4. Contreras 1B (R)
    5. Burleson DH (L) 1B/RF
    6. Walker RF (R)
    7. Gorman 3B (L)
    8. Herrera/Pages C (R)
    9. Siani/Scott CF (L)

    Saggese IF (R), ???, Scott/Siani, Pages/Herrera

Other bench spot could be Barrero or Vilade, or someone not traded for or signed yet.

Barrero and Vilade can both play multiple positions and hit RH and can give Burleson, Gorman, Scott/Siani time off vs LHP. Personally vs LHP I’d go
    1. Donovan LF
    2. Winn SS
    3. Nootbaar RF
    4. Contreras 1B
    5. Walker DH
    6. Herrera C
    7. Saggese 2B
As for CF and 3B it just a matter of who else is on the bench. Barrero has a bigger hill to climb to get there, but has mostly played CF and SS and can play 2B, LF, RF, 3B. Vilade was a SS in college, but pro ball has mostly been LF and RF, can play some CF, and also has played 3B, 2B, and 1B. But also could get Gorman, Burleson, and the LH CF crew in there. But all 4 of them have definitely had their issues with LHP, especially Burleson.

With Gorman it appears in todays game you can be a DH or OF and hit under 200 with 25+ HR’s, but his defense will need to be stellar to post #’s like that at third….I know that was his position in high school and the minors but the 2-3 year layoff makes me wonder how good he can be defensively

Gorman can hit the occasional long ball, but I wouldn’t put too many eggs in that basket.

Do not trade Arenado. With him the Cardinals can win the Central.

Cardinals aren’t concerned about winning, they are concerned about slashing payroll. They are poor.

Gamecard, I will respectfully disagree. I don’t think the Cardinals have a chance to win the division whether Nado is here or not.

You never know. Other teams can have bad luck too. If it so happens the Cardinals are right there in contention for the NL central as the trade deadline approaches, what will they do? What will Mo do? What will Bill allow Mo to do? What will Bloom agree to do?

So do you want to rely on other teams bad luck to dictate the direction your team takes? I don’t. I would have to see a meteoric assention by multiple players (Walker, Gorman, Scott) before I would be willing to do anything besides trading my expirìng contracts. Even than I wouldn’t trade prospects for another teams expiring contracts. Trying to get lucky is how we got where we are now.
