No, I do not agree with any of your latest theory, other than the part that BDW is not stupid. He is highly involved and is likely not surprised about anything.

Thank goodness WDWJr. had the self control not to extend Pujols for the kind of money he wanted. Pujols had some good years playing for the Angels, but overall he was not worth his contract.

Jr. Application Developer Mason KelleyOk. Now that I have had time to look at the list. As of today, there are 17 people combined in the two departments. Note, analytics are different than systems. Systems are IT folks.
Of the 10 people listed in Analytics as of today, one actually belongs in the Systems Group, one has been a scout for four years (started off in the analytics group), and one was hired in November.
So, the realistic count of the analytics staff is eight, one of whom started after the season ended.
When Lunhow was here the Cardinals were supposedly the envy of MLB when it came to innovation and analytics. If I recall correctly the Cardinals had the number 1 ranked farm system in 2013.
Yes, when Lunhow was here, the Cardinals were considered one of the premier analytics teams. The people that left for Houston and now Baltimore have built two teams, as the Cardinals have fallen to the point where one MLB Analyst, in a link Brian posted this summer, stated the Cardinals were one of the worst teams in baseball at analytics.

According to the link Brian posted this past summer, the Cardinals have one of the analytics staffs in baseball. The whole world could see that on display in 2023.
There is only one new person in the analytics staff, and I doubt he is going to correct the ways of the more senior people in the department.
For 2025, we have no idea who analytics will be reporting to, how it will be staffed and how their focus may change. The only thing that everyone seems to agree on is that improvements are necessary.

Obviously we can’t expect another Pujols but if the farm system can start producing some 4 WAR players on a regular basis we will be in good shape.
There were 54 players in MLB in 2024 that produced at least 4 WAR so yeah if we could do at least 2 per year that would be good.
How many had 4war and up to 3 yrs service time? 4war vets can be bought but they really don’t fit our developmental scenario.
GS, one of our resident D&D guys here probably has all the past studies on how often farms produce 4war players.
Going by 2024 alone is a flawed short term. The past 10 yrs would be a better look. Producing two 4war per season, over Blooms tenure, sounds like chasing the elusive core.
I talked to an analytics software developer several weeks ago, and he said “data analytics are only useful as a tool”. It’s how they’re applied (as a framework) that’s important. And “the experience and expertise used in applying them are the keys”. That’s what Bloom and crew bring to the table.
Can we agree that no one in our organization has Blooms Pedigree with PD and anylitics? Remember, that’s a different thing than gm or pobo. I understand there are conflicting opinions of his time in Boston, depending on ones agenda.

I agree with that statement.
But the people that have been in the analytics department the past 5-12 years have shown they don’t know how to properly apply the analytics. The organization needs to be assessing their capabilities as well as player capabilities.

I don’t know what Bloom’s pedigree is with analytics.
I do know he’s credited with building a good player development system in Boston.

The biggest issue is the Cardinals need to get back to producing 2 WAR players consistently. Last year, we only had four position players produce 2 WAR or greater, and Arenado & Contreras were two of them.
If we had 8 position players producing at least 2 WAR, we would likely win the division every year.
Unless we can’t pitch (2023).
I think that was more that we had an outfield that couldn’t catch the ball.
We had six players over 2.0 bwar and Donny as a 7th at 1.9war. Close to your scenario, but closer to the cellar than a division winner. Overall, I agree, because negative war does exist. Eliminating replacement level players is eliminating black holes in the lineup.
