I tell you WC holds little interest for me. Make up 1 game a week you lead the division @ the trade deadline. But you HAVE to start hitting or no bueno.

Since 1997 there have been 8 wild card teams that went on to win the world series. That’s what, about a 28% clip? Not bad. The NFL has seen 6 wild card teams win the super bowl since 1980……the last one being the 2010 Green Bay Packers.

The first wild card team is totally understandable to me. Four teams from each league into the playoffs is a good amount. I like that number. Often there’s one really good team that otherwise would have been left out without it. For instance, right now that’s the Braves. 5 in each league was really stretching it when they switched to that number. Six teams in starts to feel close to the NBA where almost everyone gets a chance at postseason greatness. You almost always end up with a mediocre team or two from each league.

I hadn’t realized there were that many Pugs, but yeah, that’s almost 30% which is not too shabby at all. That ’03 Marlins WC team was one of my favorite teams not named the Cardinals that won a WS. You may recall that was the one that beat Dusty and his Cubbies after they blew a 3-1 lead in the (Bartman) NLCS…Haha! And then went on to beat those heavily favored Yankees in the WS. It was also Miggy’s coming out party.

I agree jnevel. 4 playoff teams per league would be fine but what we currently have is a joke. A .500 ballclub getting into the playoffs is a dream for owners.

    A very nice Meatloaf series.

Saw the final on the out of town scoreboard at Coors. Meanwhile the Bucs throttle the local nine 8–2. Gorgeous day though and a great way to spend Father’s Day with my first born.

Sounds like there was some drama at the end. I will watch the condensed game tomorrow morning while I get in my early weekday workout.

That is 7 solid starts in a row for Mikolas

The offense is still beyond dreadful

The whole idea is for a .500ish team to be in the running for a post season berth until very near the end of the season.

I have to give Nikolas credit he has been pitching much better than I expected lately. His stuff seems to have a little extra movement instead of being so flat and he is inducing weak contact now. I’m glad to see Oli be very conservative though with Mikolas in late innings. Any signs of danger, and out a RP in. Mikolas really shows the 3rd time theough the order affect and most of his runs allowed lately have came in the 6th+

    Agree Bling.

Unless your team is truly awful you are really never out of the running for that 3rd WC.

This isn’t ALL bad as it does keep more fan bases engaged deep into a season BUT something needs to be done to reward the division winners.

It was a good first step to have the WC series extended to 3 games with all games at the team with the better record or the one team that won the division that plays in the WC round.

The best 2 division winners get a pass in the WC round but that has not always proven to be an advantage as rust is a real thing.

Maybe extend the divisional series from 5 to 7 games?

I’m not sure what else can be done now that bloat has crept into the playoffs…

With the big money coming from post season games I think it is only a matter of time before MLB goes the route of the NHL and NBA and gets 8 teams into the playoffs. But that won’t be until expansion pushes the leagues to 16 teams and four divisions.

Drop back to 154 regular season games, and go three rounds of post season plus the World Series. Baseball from St. Patty’s Day until Thanksgiving. World Series will go to a warm weather site, or domed stadium. If it means more revenues, it will happen despite our misgivings.

Whitey was always a proponent of a domed venue situated in a neutral site for the WS. He lobbied for that concept back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I never liked the idea, but Herzog was much more of a forward thinker than I’ll ever hope to be.
