Update: I initially posted old information. This game was picked up by ESPN and is not on the Bally Networks. Sorry for the confusion.

This is the Sunday night ESPN game.

Is it also going to be on BSMW?

In my mind this is an important game. We don’t want to fall back three games under .500 and end up 8 games out of first after this one.

Then we go to Houston. They are due for a hot streak. I hope it doesn’t start against us.

The next few games could determine whether or not we are buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

It’d be real easy for the Cardinals to pack it in and put forth a lazy effort for this final game after dropping the first 2 games of this series. We’ll see how they respond.

Wow .. Burleson mired in an awful slump. Not helping the team at all. Maybe he needs a patented Oli 2 day nap designed for players under 25.

If Donovan can go, he needs to sit one out.

When a one tool players one tool is slumping its a problem. Especially when there’s no other healthy alternatives.

With this on ESPN I will miss the entire series, which from the results so far has saved me some agony.

Really need to get this one and keep the mindset that this is a good club, and we will stay in this thing. A loss and you start to think that we are a bad club that had a nice stretch, but reality is always going to reappear soon.

At the beginning of the year I think most everyone picked this team to win 78-83 games.

That still looks like a pretty solid prediction.

I’ve been looking at a 5-4 road trip, figuring we split the PHI & HOU series 3-3, after taking 2 of 3 from Cincy.

Unfortunate this game is on ESPN. 2 Sundays in a row. At least we have avoided the Friday Apple TV games for a while, but we are probably due for one soon.

BOCfan, It might have been good to sit Burly last night against one of the top lefties in the league. However, Burly hit, probably, the hardest ball of the game against him. Burleson will come out of it, hit-wise. He does need to find a way to deliver more power for the team.

We’re kinda short on players with a .700 ops or better.

Agree ZTR … looks to be the way things are trending.

I agree we probably realistically around a .500 team. With so many playoff teams now, that puts us competing for a wild card if we do end up a couple of games over .500. Depending on how the market shakes up, there may not be a lot of teams selling at the deadline. I would maybe try to pull some hybrid moves of trying to win while also selling if players could get a good return. If there are only a half dozen or so full sellers, then the return should be quite good.

I really like Helsey, but if the Cards don’t see him signing a reasonable extension to stay in STL, I would sell while his value is high even if we are in contention. Baltimore will surely be in the market for a closer. I would love Mayo or Hjerstad, but I doubt unless we include someone else of good value, we could get either just from Helsey. Beavers/Norby + someone else would likely be a more realistic return.

The Cardinals are now a combined 2-10 vs. MIL and PHI this season.

This is what 1TD posted on another thread last night.

Based on this record, and our record in series finales, we should be sellers at the deadline.

Helsley has one more year of team control. Wait until next year to trade him.

Yeah Helsey has 1.5 years left here, but you could likely get a quality player out of him as well as he has played. This team needs bats for the future. I would hedge my bets on trading a RP that will get expensive like Milwaukee did with Hader to get someone of value. The return on Helsey is going to be much higher if you trade him this year and it sounds like other teams are very interested in him.

The problem I have with trading Helsley for a prospect is that we just traded five years of Palacios for one year of Kittredge.

Now, how are we going to replace Kittredge & Helsley in the bullpen next year?

Now let’s turn our attention to what is really important today.

    Din-din!

Din-din today will be a T-Bone steak in the air fryer along with some jumbo crinkle cut french fries in the oven. And an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew and some Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream for dessert. All of this at first pitch of the Reds and Cubs from Wrigley. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente whilst me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch to watch the Reds win over the Cubs.

Tonight we will be on the couch as well. Our late night snack will be some salisbury steaks in the oven and a strawberry pie from Lakeview, the Amish restaurant north of town. Along with a couple of more cigars while we watch the Redbirds salvage a game from Philadelphia. I am going to call this one 7-3 Redbirds with both Goldschmidt and Arenado getting off the schneid with long dongs.

I actually like the idea of selling and buying at the same time. I’m not sure we have the front office to execute that plan though. I would trade Hesley for Kjerstad yesterday. Sign me up for that. Relievers are a dime a dozen. Young power hitting OF’s are not.

If they did do that, all they would be doing is proving this is a rudderless ship.

Trading away Helsleys 9th innings could be a nightmare PR decision that lasts. I’d considerate it a bold transaction.

Does the Hader trade by MIL gives us any insight into that trade returns worth now? First one that came to mind.

MIL got Esteury Ruiz and Gasser out of the deal. Ruiz turned into William Contreras via the 3 team deal with Atlanta and Oakland. Gasser has been pitching very well so far and looks to be a good rotation piece.

If Stl doesn’t want to spend at the luxury cap level or tank for years on end, then they need to do a hybrid approach of selling high on players when they can and always looking out for young players. We aren’t a top payroll team, but we are ahead of MIL. We can take the same approach, but with the luxury of keeping some stars around / bringing in quality FA like Gray.

Edit: They also got Taylor Rodgers who was their closer the rest of the year before becoming a FA. They took the hybrid approach quite literally getting MLB players to help win and young talent that was almost MLB ready

Hader was making $11M at the time so it was also about salary relief for the relatively small budget Brewers. Only one of the four players they received are still in the organization, which is Robert Gasser, a young starter who has put up good numbers. Hader is now in Houston.
