I agree gscottar, money should have been paid up front not back end. I still say hes suffering from either the injury he had earlier in the season or something entirely different.

Sonny exited at 86 pitches. He has been under 90 his last 5 starts, going 94 May 3rd. He has not gone 100 all season. Gone 90 3 times. Less than 90 7 times.

I looked at 2023. 32 starts. Went 100 5 times. Went 90 an additional 11 times. Went less than 90 16 times.

So exiting under 90 pitches is not unusual, he did it in half his starts last year. It does not seem to relate to injury, that’s just how it is. He is exiting under 90 more than half this year, as might be expected of a 34 year old post prime starter. He still looks good out there, but he is not going to be going deep like we had fantasized. 4 QS in 10 GS so far. For a number 1, meh. It’s going to get even more meh as the salary ramps up.

Maybe the idea is to be gentle so he lasts through the contract. I can understand the attention to 6th-7th inning relief guys. Middleton’s injury threw a wrench into that, but, the back up has done pretty good. Middle relief is the one and only area where there is some depth. That was a good strategy for countering the over-the-hill rotation. There doesn’t seem to have been anything done to counter an over-the-hill middle of the lineup though. Now that’s the problem.
