Also BS South and Southwest ExtraI’m not wishing anything bad for Tyler O’Neill (a.k.a. ‘Robocop’), but in his last five games he has 3 hits in 18 AB, with 1 of those hits being a HR.
O’Neill has had a nice start for the Sox but will probably come back down to earth. I don’t blame the Cardinals for trading him because he wasn’t going to thrive here but they do need to figure out why players do better elsewhere.
O’Neill’s 10 HR’s are flashy, but he’s only collected a paltry 16 RBI’s. The vast majority of his PA’s have come from the 3 slot, so that tells me he hasn’t generated nearly enough offensive production with runners aboard. He’s scored 25 runs, so that’s to his credit, but he’s also K’d 47 times. I don’t miss him too much.

This is exactly how the Cardinals think and why players like O’Neill do better in other organizations.
Well maybe, but I’ll guess the back of O’Neill’s card for ’24 looks similar to .235/17/48.

Right now, he is at .256/.371/.554, which is similar to his 2021 season.
O’Neal is kind of a fringy all or nothing guy. It seems like he hits a lot homers in trash time, ie when it doesn’t matter, and kills a lot of rallies with Ks.
These next three series against the Red Sox, Orioles, and Cubs are going to tell us a lot about our favorite team.
7 of his homeruns this year have come when the game was within one run, 8 within 2 runs and all 10 within 3 runs.
He has a 1.167 OPS with nobody on, and a .929 OPS with a guy on 2nd. He does terribly with a guy on 1st, which might be due to trying to avoid the DP.
He also has fewer K’s than Paul Goldschmidt, which means next year, when Goldschmit is on a new team, he will be back to OPSing over .900.

Curious to see what kind of ovation that O’Neill gets when he comes to the plate in his first atbat.
The relatively few in attendance will stand and give him a nice ovation because that is what Cardinals fans do.
Yep, O’Neill will get a nice round of applause for his first AB as thanks for his moments of glory here. He has struggled of late after a great start so we will see how he does this weekend.
The Red Stockings are a better club than us, but not a great club.
This homestand might keep Ollie employed for the year, or end his tenure early. I am thinking the best we will do is 4-5, but more than likely go 2-7. If it’s a disaster and we end up 1-8 or oh ‘fer, we might see fans with bags over their heads and boos reigning down all over the place. Could be unprecedented in recent Cardinal history.
This is a big homestand in terms of the potential for adding to the profit margins with the Red Sox, Orioles and Cubs for 9 games. I fully expect Billy Jr. and Johnny to at some point gather around the HP area just prior to game time and take turns speaking into a microphone to thank the GFIBB for their loyal support…
The weekend Cubs series will be interesting as far as attendance, and how much blue is in the stands. I imagine Cubs fans have an easier time getting tickets than in the past.
I’d expect plenty of blue in the stands and plenty of requests for Heileman’s Old Style at the concessions..
The Pirates lead the Cubs 5-4 heading into the last of the 9th at Wrigley on Thursday night. Mastruboni, Amaya and Tauchman due up.

Time to watch the Reds and Dodgers from Dodger Stadium tonight. Going to have a bowl or two of chili and a cherry turnover. Then a couple of 7×50 Palma Real Cigars to finish out the game. Hope it’s not a complete blowout as Glasnow is hurling for the Dodgers.

O’Neill won’t be getting the full treatment. He will get a slight round of applause in his first trip to the dish. He was not a home grown talent and it wasn’t like he did grandiose things for several years in St.Louis. If he were to get a huge standing ovation….now this may sound crass….but I think I would lose a bit of respect for our fans from a baseball savvy standpoint.
Tomorrow is Friday. We’ve spoken a couple times now about Fridays being Catfish Fiddler Game Thread Din-Din Day. So far the response has been tepid at best, with only Rat, BicycleMike and myself indulging. Yes, catfish are bottom dwelling, scum sucking, muck rucking, lazy, lowdown fish. But they are surprisingly tasty. We would like to see at least two more posters man-up tomorrow by taking the Catfish Fiddler plunge. And hopefully by season’s end we’ll have at least 20 fellow fiddlers joining the club.
