    The A’s are doing their best to keep us out of last place and lead the Pirates 3-0 in the 8th.

    Both Matz and Mikolas are precarious starters, right now. Mo needs to find a way to find at least one other competent starting pitcher to plug into the rotation before it’s too late to matter. Robberse, maybe, from within. If not, maybe a trade for one when Carlson and Edman come back. The Cardinals have a surplus of second basemen in the organization that might have some interest to another team.

    You can relax Shady. Mikolas and Matz are signed through 2025. There are millions of reasons why we are going to keep seeing them every 5 days.

    Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Steven Matz has a ‘back issue’. No IL so far. I said at the beginning of the season that if Matz can’t contribute anything of value to the organization, they should just cut him and consider it a sunk cost. I still believe that. This feels almost as bad as having Brett Cecil around for four years and $30M.

    blingboy, Mikolas might be OK as a middle innings reliever through ’25. I’m ready to see what Robberse can do as a starter. Followed by Hence a little later in ’24. One way or the other, they are going to need some “fresh blood” in the starting staff by ’25.

    Another day another loss. Yeah, Matz and Mikolas haven’t been too good, but the offense is still our biggest weakness. We just get shut down too often.

    For a year plus now we are just not a good club, with what appears to be poor field leadership to boot.

    The primary ‘back issue’ is that he should have been passed over back in ’21.

    Ollies bullpen use continues to confuse me.

    Yesterday in game 2 he uses Gallegos, arguably our least effective bullpen guy in the 8th inning with us just down by one. Got burned. Gallegos has done well for us in the past but very inconsistent this year. So we go into the ninth inning down 5 instead of down one.

    And what is he trying to do with Libratore? He is supposed to be our 6th starter and long reliever but Ollie is using him in the late innings and sometimes on consecutive days. The trio of Romero, Kitteredge and Helsley has done fine so far so why mess around with other things. And I know they can’t go everyday, but Gallegos?

    And Winn who is leading the team in defensive WAR, offensive WAR and total WAR has sat for 3 games and didn’t start two other games. Young guy and unless there are injuries we don’t know about why take him out of the lineup. He must be wondering what he has to do to be out there every day.

    I happened to notice that Friday’s game vs. the White Sox is “Adult Cardinals Soccer Jersey” night. That sounds a little risque…

    Yes, Gallegos is even worse this year than last year. Hopefully the Cardinals organization will see it before he blows more games.

    Liberatore – he is next man up right now after Romero, Kittredge and Helsley. I prefer him being used every day rather than once every two weeks. Now, if you are going to move him into a long-relief role, maybe you piggy-back him with Matz or Mikolas. Heck, have him start and move Matz to relief.

    Winn is going to sit once per week. We brought Crawford in to serve as backup SS because nobody else on the team or in AAA can play the position adequately with Edman out. Needed a backup SS anyway if Edman was going to be our starting CF.

    The Cardinals won’t pay Matz $12.5 million to pitch middle relief.

    What are you thinking TD, like maybe a crop top jersey? If I showed up to my seat in something like that it would clear out the whole section.

    Haha!…I’m not sure what to think, Bling. I always thought a trip to the ballpark was more in line with a family type outing and not something that was adult themed…

    The scheduled MRI after his last poor outing sounds to me like they’re manuevering into a position in which they’ll announce he’ll miss a couple of turns.

    Well, we can all breathe a sigh of relief as the A’s top the Pirates in a 4-0 final that eliminates any possibility that the Cardinals will sleep in the cellar tonight.

    Somebody tell me, with the Cardinals struggling offense, why you wouldn’t they give this a chance against all the RHP starters they see. Winn at #2 and Burleson #3 in the lineup in front of Goldy, Arenado, Contreras, Nootbaar and Gorman. There is a need to shake up the lineup up to try to get some offense going. Let Burleson have the best chance possible to crush fast balls. And utilize Winn’s speed more as a table setter at #2. Move the strike out prone guys down in the order. It won’t happen. But it should.

    Matz is softer than Charmin….always injured when he gets lit up

    The Cardinals had 4 players in their starting lineup who are hitting below a .225 clip. It wasn’t too very long ago that if a player couldn’t hit above .225 it was probably a good idea for him to apply for a license to sell real estate or life insurance. It’s my view that the quality of play in what used to be called the Big Leagues has really been watered down. With continuous expansion to 30 teams and all of the money and hype that’s involved, I guess an inferior product should be expected.

    Mikolas provided a quality start today it was the offense – again.

    The Cardinals right now rank 28th out of 30 MLB teams in runs scored. Seriously, how is that possible?

    Just not cashing in on opportunities. It feels like we should be 1st in DP’s ground into.

    We’re not even close. Probably because we never have any runners on base.

    Cardinals have 18 GIDP, Yankees lead with 36

    Well, at least we know how to run ourselves out of an inning too, when we actually hit.

    How is that possible? They’re:
    * 26th in OBP (.300)
    * 28th in SLG (.337)
    * 27th in OPS (.639)
    * 28th in OPS+ (82)
    * 27th in wRC+ (84)
    * 27th in Offensive RAA (-20.4)

    About the only major offensive category in which they aren’t bottom 5 is base running (ranked 12th in RAA with 0.2). They would have to be pretty lucky to rank much higher than 28th in runs scored given those inputs.

    It could be worse. Two more slivers until they hit the deck.
