If the manager is just a puppet following the scripts, as some believe, why would the next guy be any different?

Or if the manager is making bad decisions on his own, then analytics aren’t driving all the calls, after all.

I don’t know the answer BW. All I know is that Shildt was fired for his belief the organization was headed in the wrong direction and voiced those concerns. So, to me, it seems like its a combination of the two. Analytics is giving Marmol data but somehow the data is poor and/or he’s making the wrong decisions.

ZTR – you are correct that walking Contreras should have been the call. Might even walk Adames too and load them up just to get to Ortiz who has only 67 plate appearances in the majors. I wonder what the analytics say about that? Tried to find an explanation from Marmol about why they pitched to Contreras but can’t find one.

I thought about walking Contreras too at the time. First base was open. You do potentially put another run out there to score and dig yourself further into a hole, especially with Adames coming up who is also a hot hitter right now. Then yes, there’s the option to walk Adames too, but then you’re one Helsley slider in the dirt away from the run scoring. I think the decision was ultimately a toss up between all 3 options and Ollie just chose to pitch to Contreras. I’m fine with it. It could have turned out better or worse with any of those alternatives. The bigger issue was Helsley’s location of middle middle on that first pitch fastball. And the waaaaaayyyy bigger issue than that is the team’s lack of momentum and hitting confidence right now.
