Would like others opinions on this. I never gave much thought to how Zobrist plays the game before but after seeing him in this series I would find it hard to like him. I guess you could call it poor sportsmanship to be bouncing from left to right behind second base as a pitch is thrown. It is obviously an attempt to distract the batter and perhaps even block his view of the ball because a part of the batters eye becomes white from the players uniform.
But what I find just dirty about him is the way he takes a throw on a steal. Three times I saw him position himself about two feet off of second base toward first base. In this way he can interrupt any runner coming in on a slide or head first. Not sure about these days, but in the old days he would have a set of spikes into his ankles and be out for a while. It may be a tactic that is not prohibited but sooner or later somebody is going to take offense and put one on him. Most defensemen will positon themselves at the base to take the throw from the catcher. Evidently the Cubs have told the catchers to throw to the 1B side as that is where he will be positioned. Some may recall seeing Kolten stand up from a slide when he saw that Zobrist was standing in the line of travel. That could be called obstruction. It didn’t seem to bother Welke as much as a slight movement from Gallegos.
Didn’t notice that yesterday MM3. He was ok when he played 3rd and of with the Rays. When Maddon left to go to the Cubs he took Zobrist with him. Their best player at the time. They bought alot of their players wheras a lot of ours are home grown.
I am surprised that nobody has inquired about when the last time that a team was swept 4 straight games at home with all games being one run decisions? Or if it has ever occured at all? Anybody know, or is this a question that only Skippy and the fine folks over at the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau can answer?
I am going to celebrate the sweep tonight with a DiGiorno Supreme Pizza, a cherry Danish, and a Mt. Dew or two whilst I watch the premiere/debut episode of Charlie’s Angels. 43 years ago tonight, Wednesday night, 10:00 est, September 22, 1976, Charlie’s Angels debuted. The episode was titled HellRide.

Pugs, I believe I read somewhere that this was only the second time in MLB history that such a thing occurred and the last time, it was the Red Sox falling to the Indians in four such crushing games back in 1919. Maybe such a beat down will set them back another 80+ years as it did for those Red Sox. We can only hope.
FROM ELIAS: The Cubs are the 2nd team in MLB history to be swept in a 4-game series at home, losing each game by 1 run. The previous instance was 100 years ago, when the Red Sox were swept in 4 straight games at Fenway Park by the Indians.

Thanks for the info, Brian & stlcard25! And also a tip of the cap to those absolute diamonds in the rough over at the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau for their competent aid. I knew we had just witnessed something extremely rare this weekend. It’s just the sort of things champions do. Even if our boys do not register the last defensive out of 2019, how they have come together as a cohesive team, after being such a mundane unit for a large part of the year, is truly special. You have to look at the man occupying the top step of the dugout as the main proponent for pulling that feat off.
Great choice of tv viewing, Rat! Please feel free to indulge not in one, but two pieces of cherry delight “whilst” you relive Charlie’s maiden telivisional voyage.
I have consumed a good many catfish in my life, most often accompanied by hush puppies and fries, but I have never heard the term catfish fiddlers from you guys on this forum. Nonetheless, I am all for it. If you can persuade the Cardinal powers to host a “Catfish Fiddler night,” I’m in. And I’ll try to arrange a visit with my sister in St. Louis that night, perhaps even bring her along.
This past weekend was probably the most glorious stretch of Cardinal baseball since Game 6 and 7 of the 2011 World Series. I mean we literally couldn’t have scripted it any better.
There are still two more things I want to see happen this week:
1. Cards clinch the NLC.
2. Cubs get officially eliminated from the playoffs.When those two things happen I will breathe a sigh of relief and know that we have broken the streak of not advancing further than them since 2014.
