Wow, the Phillies score 6 in the 9th including a walk off grand slam. The Cards remain tied despite the loss and the Cubs lose in the cruelest possible fashion. That dulls the pain of this loss a bit.
Wieters seemed like a poor choice for a number of reasons. Thomas has swung a hot bat so why not give the hungry rookie a shot?
Shildt wanted a LH bat because Iglesias is so nasty against RH bats.
Goldy has been a rocky ride this year and was particularly bad tonight. He has to go down as one of the key disappointments thus far considering the investment and not fulfilling the role and meeting the expectations they have for him.
I still hold realistic hope that he will make us all happy in September, when it matters the most. But yeah, he hasn’t come close to earning his money yet.

I just spent some time reading some Cubs fans’ meltdown as the Phillies game slipped away. I feel better, but the Cards need to find a way to hit Castillo tomorrow and hope Waino forgets that he’s not at Busch.
Boy Goldy had a sizzling hot July though….and the team excelled along with him. The way this team is presently comprised, everything hinges on Goldy. If he has a poor to mediocre finish to the season, we can forget about post season play.

Pretty much, Pugs. This team was banking on Goldy and Carpenter being more like the 2018 versions of themselves. Most any offense can’t really sustain their two best players losing 100+ points of OPS from their career average (over 150 for Carpenter).
We really do need one or both to have a hot finish to have a shot. .800+ OPS for both might well do enough to let the bullpen pitch us into October.

Good news is Flaherty, Hudson, and Wacha vanquished some road demons this week. Hopefully Wainwright and Mikolas were taking notes.

So that’s the reason. Actually I think some of the clubhouse pranksters have been smearing some of that Tom & Jerry vanishing cream on Helsley and Lane Thomas right before Shildt fills out the lineup card.
I’m not one to gloat about other people’s misery and torment…..except when it comes to the cubbies. I ask you….. is there a prettier sight than seeing cub players staring out onto the field in utter disbelief, watching their opposition jump around in frenzied delight? And for some unexplained reason, historically, cub players seem to relish doing just that after an agonizing loss. If that happens to me, I’m quickly meeting eye contact with one opposing player and then flipping him off with gusto and then getting into that clubhouse asap to blare some tunes to help forget what just occured. These cub players will hang around the dugout and watch the players and fans go wild until someone (usually their manager) finally shoos them down into their clubhouse…..craziest thing you’ll ever see. I bet as we speak, there are still a few cubs in their dugout whipping away the tears….almost 30 minutes after Harper stung them.
So Thomas can’t get into a lineup again? Jesus!
Quit playing Carpenter! I get that Edman isn’t anything great either but at least he’s not as bad currently. Shildt really knows how to suck the life out of a winning streak.

I loved watching the Cub meltdown. About the prettiest thing you will see.
What wasn’t pretty was our offense. Two nights in a row we flirt with being no hit. I am sure glad we fired Budaska. That will solve all of our problems. Good grief.
Harper watched his HR for a couple seconds, so it took him about 8 seconds to get to 1B. From there, it took an additional 11 seconds to reach home. I haven’t seen a guy run that fast on a walk off HR before.
Scared em a little in the 9th I guess. Pretty amazing we got a run on only 2 hits. I guess we’re gonna have to resort to voo doo to get the bats going. Go Cardinals!

What makes Edman “not as bad?” Is it the .288 OBP? The 80 wRC+? I don’t see much differentiating either of those two at this point with the exception of base running for Edman and on base skills for Carpenter. It’s certainly not an obvious choice. If Shildt is going to force one of them to hit 2nd in the lineup, then I guess I’d take the guy with the better career and hope it clicks finally over the rookie who probably will need longer to adjust to the big leagues.
It appears that Budda may have put a hex on the boys. Probably the worst offensive game of the season. Wacha not to blame for this stinker for sure. Aroz’s balloon has returned to earth and KW gave it his best shot and Matt Wieters may be out of miracles for this season. Most disturbing was the number of strikeouts looking at a 3rd strike with men on base and two outs – 5 times by my count including Goldies with the bases loaded. But I am still a Goldie fan because of what he has done on defense at 1B. That position was always a weak one for the past few years. He will get his bat going again but he has never let us down on defense. Carp? Well he is still Carp. Maybe he should try pitching in a Rick Ankiel reversal. Never can tell.
I am not much for stats especially ones like this. Batters in positions 1 thru 5 each struck out twice for a total of 10 times. Add in Wacha’s two SOs and that accounts for 12 of the 15. Maybe if we lead off with 6/7/8 we could get a hit or two but then Molina/Wong/Arozarena only contributed one hit total.
We were swinging at everything but strikes last night. Usually watched the strikes go by, particularly disturbing with runners in scoring position. Good hitters foul off two strike pitches close to or in the zone.
I am not critical of using Weiters as the pinch hitter. He has had a number of clutch hits this season. And a vet is usually more reliable in those situations.
I can hardly be critical of Shildt’s use of the bullpen. They have probably been our best group this season. Actually I was suprised to see him use Helsley last night. He was pretty much up and down in AAA this season with marginal command. Possibly he could have used him more in blowout situations but we haven’t had many of them lately thanks to our offense.
I hope last night was not an example of modern hitting.
